In desperate need of boys' names, but DP and I have wildly differing views. DP favours daft pretentious names like Artemus, Balthazar and Marmaduke. I kid you not. I prefer more solid sounding names less likely to get DS beaten up in playground (like Jacob, Calum, Isaac or James) but DP predictably hates these. We both liked Elliot or Max, but can't do names beginning with E or ending with x. Possible compromises (but both of us need persuading) are:

Aldous (Aldo or Al for short)
Calvin (Cal for short)
Jasper

Views (or alternatives) gratefully received.

Calvin, Cal for short, is cool.

compo · 24/02/2009 20:14

why can't you have Elliot or Max?

greengecko · 24/02/2009 20:16

Can't do Es as it spells something rude with surname initials, and x at the end sounds weird because the surname also has an x in it.

Why can't you do names ending in X or beginning in E? That's a very odd set of rules.

DrTrillianAstra · 24/02/2009 20:17

That's a good reason for not having E - good forward-thinking!

LaDiDaDi · 24/02/2009 20:18

Jasper.

dustbuster · 24/02/2009 20:18

I like Calvin and Jasper. What about Otto (a personal fave) or Abner?

Bella73 · 24/02/2009 20:18

I like Calvin best and probably Jasper least (thinking of Jasper Carrot is the problem for me there, the name itself is okay)

plonker · 24/02/2009 20:21

Aldous (Aldo or Al for short) - reminds me strongly of arduous ...not a good name to be saddled with
Calvin (Cal for short) - cool name, I like this
Jasper - 'tis ok

Possible alternatives: -

Sebastian
Alexander (Xander)
Christian
Cassius
Tobias (Toby)

MrsMattie · 24/02/2009 20:21

Your alternatives aren't nice. Your names are the best .

Caspar
Gabriel
Laurence
Irving
Tobias
Samuel
Alexander
Elias
Wilbur
Frederick
Benedict
Nathaniel
Louis
Stefan

Oooohhhh we have a Max who I wanted to be called Elliot but we already have a Harriet so that was out.

I love Jasper - one of my friends has a beautiful little 'sod' called Jasper - he looks like an angel but you know as he grows he is so going to be more of the devil!

What about Rupert - pretentious but not too out there!

mileniwmffalcon · 24/02/2009 20:23

I'd rather have a slightly rude initials than a name I din't like tbh
you can overanayse these things

chandellina · 24/02/2009 21:01

i don't see what's wrong with an x and an x in the surname. could sound good.

sonniebonnie · 24/02/2009 21:24

From your alternatives I like Calvin and Jasper. Both are much nicer and unique than Max imo.

Alternatively, what about

Sebastian
Quentin
Conrad

Supercherry · 25/02/2009 11:48

I really like Jasper.

BlueChampagne · 25/02/2009 13:47

I like Jasper too. Might these help too?

Arlo
Laurence
Harvey
Morgan
Justin
Julius
Marcus

LuLuBai · 25/02/2009 14:11

Jasper is gorgeous.
Calvin I do like - but you know it's meaning is 'bald'? I do like it, and Cal is a great nickname, but I think it's worth knowing that before you choose it.
Aldous I find a little heavy sounding. Much prefer Arlo. Really love Arlo in fact(but DH vetoed on the grounds that some newsreader already chose it for her kid).

I also love Max and Elliot. (and like mileniwmffalcon have wondered what on earth your surname must be - for a start I can't think of any rude things beginning with E!)

Other ideas
Conrad
Gabriel
Aubrey

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Looks like Calvin might be the front-runner for now. I know it means bald (which is part of the reason for the intial hesitation) but if it means finding a name that DP and I can agree on, might have to live with that (we have full heads of hair on both sides of the family in any case). Like some of the other suggestions, especially Arlo. Really like Laurence, but unfortunately the name of an ex boyfriend so definitely out of the running!

Love Calvin!
if your into names that are a wee bit unusual how about Maverick (Mav for short)? It's a love it or hate it name but it's on my boy's list!

bogie · 26/02/2009 15:03

Spencer
Justin
Joel
Zachary

Bubbaluv · 26/02/2009 15:03

Sorry to be negative, but to me Calvin would be the nerd character in one of those 80s American teen movies. His best mate would be Eugine.

Bubbaluv · 26/02/2009 15:03

Love Jasper though!!

FairySparkles · 26/02/2009 15:09

Yeah but Calvin on Hollyoaks is lush! lol
