Opinions on the boys name Spike please!

My husband keeps saying if we have a baby boy he wants to call him Spike.
Initially I thought thats a dogs name - because a girl I went to school with years ago had a little dog called Spike.
But I must admit that over time the name has grown on me - and now it mostly makes me think of a really cool little chap! What do you think? Was my first opinion right or could this be a good name? Would he have to be a certian type of boy to carry it off? What if he is shy? (ok, enough of my questions!!!)

I think of it as the name of the bad guy in almost every cartoon I've ever seen...

lou33 · 10/02/2009 15:09

i like it

Thanks for all your opinions- I found this rather helpful!

I dont believe there is a name that everyone would always agree is great!

I think its a shame someone can be pre-judged by their name alone, based upon how it sounds and what image the other person sees in their mind! I was afraid that would be the case.

It shows I had my doubts about the name in that I needed to ask - so that surely answers my own question!

The name Spike has sure grown on me and I do actually like it! Having said that I hope DH and I will agree on a different name should we need to; otherwise I will pray for a girl!

Thanks again for your responses

Dog in Tom and Jerry or British vampire with dodgy hair.
Great nickname but wouldn't saddle a DS with it as a real name - suppose he becomes a high court judge?
Or an undertaker?
Ok if he is to be a WWE wrestler, I suppose.

ThumbLoveWitch · 11/02/2009 01:02

gosh, i really should have read Califrau's post before I wrote mine - it's not quite word for word but the sentiments are identical!

VeryAnnieMary · 11/02/2009 09:09

I like it - but to carry off something a bit left field like that you and your DH have to be absolutely sure about it, otherwise the inevitable negative comments will get you down.

scotagm · 11/02/2009 21:28

Nasty - this boy has to go for job interviews one day.

I'm a teacher, so come across many unusual names that very quickly you think "yes - that works", but not this.

VeryAnnieMary - It's not about what the parents can carry off - the child is the person who has to carry this off!

Awful!

loulabell07 · 12/02/2009 00:27

Well I dont think it is really quite that bad- it is a name afterall, lets put this in context - this not a bad person we are talking about.

If I were to name him Spike (or any other name for that matter) I'm sure it wouldn't stop him doing charity work if he wanted to! Or doing his best at school! And I would hope that it wouldn't affect how he would be treated either. Although this exercise kind of suggests it will! That is def worth knowing!

Oh well! Some good points anyway. Thank you all.

Spike is a great name - wish I had thought of it, and had the courage to use it.

TheYearOfTheCat · 12/02/2009 00:41

Didn't know Spike Milligan had all those 1st names; how many people these days have four forenames? That's quite posh.

MadamDeathstare, I like Sid! It's a good, proper name, unlike Spike...

Sheeta · 12/02/2009 09:52

Will forever remind me of Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (sorry )

Lotster · 12/02/2009 11:14

MadamDS - I love Sid too, the name of my sort of adopted grandad! Was on my shortlist before I knew this one's a girl. We also quite liked Bob.

Pikey Spikey?

Soz, but if I were a kid...

Biccy · 12/02/2009 22:40

We had a christmas card last year from X, X and Spike. Couldn't work out who on earth we knew with a dog called Spike.... turned out it was the new baby... sorry, I think your first instinct was right...

LackaDAISYcal · 12/02/2009 22:42

I know a Spike who is a grown man with three children as well HeadFairy. I wonder if they are the same person??? If so, I know his real name

I like it, mainly because of the association with my friend. You'd have to be a pretty cool person to carry it off I think.

spiker · 12/02/2009 23:00

Spencer is a fantastic first name. Spike is a great nickname, but really it is a nickname.

DS1 is known by his abbreviated name, and occasionally as Spike (just by us).

He also has a family surname as his middle name.

susiey · 13/02/2009 13:33

my friends little boy is called spike and hes really cute I love it

BalloonSlayer · 13/02/2009 13:45

I thought I have posted this before but Spike used to be a common nickname in Britain for someone tall and thin - ie they look like a Spike. This is how Spike Milligan got his nickname, when he was in the army. If you read his war memoirs (and very funny they are too) there are quite a few other Spikes featuring in them.

Spike Milligan was always Terry to his family.

So if you are not a tall thin family, it might not be a good idea.
