Opinions on the boys name Spike please!

My husband keeps saying if we have a baby boy he wants to call him Spike.
Initially I thought thats a dogs name - because a girl I went to school with years ago had a little dog called Spike.
But I must admit that over time the name has grown on me - and now it mostly makes me think of a really cool little chap! What do you think? Was my first opinion right or could this be a good name? Would he have to be a certian type of boy to carry it off? What if he is shy? (ok, enough of my questions!!!)

IMO being NOT suitable for a lawyer, doctor and especially prime minister is a VERY GOOD reason to call him Spike.

PestoDrizzleMonster · 10/02/2009 12:56

Wasn't Spike the dog on Rugrats?

Lotster · 10/02/2009 13:10

I bet there are many, many, many more dogs called Ben or Holly than Spike, yet they are both lovely children's names.

Spike is a characterful name without being silly, and even if he were if he were a lawyer I'd choose him to represent me!

PestoDrizzleMonster · 10/02/2009 13:14

Imagine if he ended up with curly hair though, or long floppy hair......

georgiemum · 10/02/2009 13:14

The dog out of Tom and Gerry. Please don't.

LadyThompson · 10/02/2009 13:16

The dog out of Tom and Jerry. Please do.

georgiemum · 10/02/2009 13:22

Butch
Rover
Tyson
Tiddles, hang on that's a cat
Clifford the big red dog
Lassie
Rin Tin Tin
Pongo
Hairy MacLairy from Donaldsons Dairy

Oh it's your decision. If you like it, go for it. Do the 'yell it out loud in a crowded supermarket' test (especially if there are any middle names).

TheCrackFox · 10/02/2009 13:33

I like it and if it means he doesn't grow up to be a Doctor, lawyer or PM I like it even more.

My sis was told her DS1's name is a dogs name..........

he is called Ben.

chaya5738 · 10/02/2009 13:41

Spike should only be a nickname, IMO.

For all those people putting forward Spike Milligan as an example, his real name was Terence Alan Patrick Seán Milligan.

Lotster · 10/02/2009 13:45

Which is why everyone called him Spike I'm guessing! Terence wasn't a better choice was it

KristinaM · 10/02/2009 13:53

i agree with hens mum

he will be a baby for a few months, a little boy for a few years and a man for a long time. stating the obvious i know but some parenst seem to forget they are naming a person not a baby

Metatron · 10/02/2009 14:04

it's my cat's name. Nickname only imo. You can'y make him cool. Imagine a non-cool Spike- tragic.

ohdearwhatamess · 10/02/2009 14:05

Fails on the 'future Governor of the Bank of England' name test, I think.

Fine as a nickname.

Littlefish · 10/02/2009 14:15

I absolutely love it. It was on our top 5 list for dd if she'd been a boy, even though it really didn't go with our surname.

TheCrackFox · 10/02/2009 14:16

But the current bank of England gov is called Mervyn.

SoupDragon · 10/02/2009 14:17

No. Use it as a nickname.

oysterpots · 10/02/2009 14:17

I like it, always used to call my DH Spike as a nickname. Thought about it for DS but it would sound rubbish with my surname and didn't really suit my DS.

I don't think it's the silliest name, tbh. I'd prefer it to loads of really square PM-type names
Spike or Paul?
Spike or David?
Spike or Steve?
Spike or John?

I know which I'd go for!

MrsMattie · 10/02/2009 14:17

I know a boy called Spike. Well, he's a man now. He changed his name by deed pole to Dan when he was old enough.

Tillyscoutsmum · 10/02/2009 14:18

I know of a little boy called Spike.... and his surname is actually Lee

I think Spencer is a good compromise (and that fact its your maiden name actually makes even nicer imho)

Ponders · 10/02/2009 14:19

great as a nickname but make sure he is a Spike first.

He might turn out to be a Fotherington-Tomas

chandellina · 10/02/2009 14:36

LOOVE Spencer and Spike! go for it.

FairLadyRandySlut · 10/02/2009 14:45

Spike is awful, sorry....

kslatts · 10/02/2009 14:47

I like the name Spike. My dd1's name is a name that is a shortened version of a longer name, but we didn't like the longer version so just put the shortened version on her birth certificate.

deleting · 10/02/2009 14:47

it's trying too hard to be cool, which makes it not. It's probably better if later in life he gets it as a nickname because he's that type of character, rather than trying to make someone live up to a name. If he doesn't turn out to be a 'spike', it'll just embarrass him.

Thunderduck · 10/02/2009 14:53

Absolutely not. It isn't at all nice.
