Xavier - Pretentious tosser - popular at face value but bitched-about on the quiet.

Joshua - agree with SoMuchToBits' description. Outgoing, warm, funny. Not outstanding at anything in particular but reasonably bright. Well-liked. Wears a leather jacket in late adolescenthood.

Eva as a small child displayed an artistic flair from very early on. She grows into a tall willowy woman who plays the piano and loves cats.
Jasmine is a quiet and sensitive girl. She moves slowly and purposefully and has a calming aura.
Scarlett is a passionate and temperamental character. She is domineering and powerful.
Esme is thoughtful and philosophical.

Tristian is ruddy cheeked rugby boy. He is a thrill seeker who will try anything.
Charlie is confident and image conscious. He is a bit shallow but a happy chap who knows how to have fun.

Eva: gravel-voiced Viennese WW2 refugee who smokes like a chimney, wears Chanel, and listens to Shostakovich for pleasure. Delightful, frail, occasionally completely terrifying.

Jasmine: pretty, not bright, perfect handwriting, pink bedroom. Possibly picks nose.

Scarlett: (in the days before la Johansson, probably an very old ex-flapper who wore too much makeup and was smoking buddies with Eva) nice public-schoolgirl, a bit naive, beautiful and talented. Dad's mates ask each other if she's legal yet. Scarlett is definitely far too nice to have the faintest idea what they're on about.

Esme: the older sister of Eva?

Tristian: a lost cause if parents don't spell it "Tristan". Otherwise, Tristan Farnon comes to mind.

Charlie: cute. snub-nosed, rumple-haired, inquisitive. (good name this year - possible future famous scientist?)

Sebastian: aesthete. Too gentle for the world. Aware that he can't live up to Bach.

Finley: small northern irish ratbag with a cheeky grin. Terrible in class. Probably grows up to be a highly successful and serious barrister and has kids called Jasmine and Tristan.

Xavier: see Sebastian but perhaps substitute Baudelaire?

Joshua: sweet and stolid. Good at school, 2:1 at uni, nice job, nice wife, nice house.

For what (little) it's worth

Eva - Very sweet and pretty but leaves school with no qualifications.
Jasmine - Tries hard to live up to her exotic name but never gets farther than Tring. Later becomes mayor.
Scarlett - Sends her life explaining that she was named after Scarlett O'Hara, even though she has mousy hair. Lacks confidence but later becomes librarian of an Oxbridge college.
Esme - Head girl of her school. Wins the 'most likely to succeed' prize at drama school and makes a good living in BBC period dramas.

Tristan - Handome and clever. Destined for the board of his father's merchant bank.
Charlie - Thinks of himself as a bit of a geezer. Never mentions that his father is HM Ambassador to Moscow.
Sebastian - Most popular boy in the class. Makes a million when his quirky invention is sold to a multi-national.
Finlay - Another wannabe geezer.

Yes, I certainly have. But I also know that the image conjured up by the name Doris is very different from that conjured up by Fifi Kitten. I think these threads are fascinating because they show the thought associations that people make.

I sincerely hope that nobody bases their choice of baby names on what anyone on MN says. I'm sure they don't.

and also, I do think that people live up to their names to a certain extent. Maybe because people with for example, VERY girly names (with no variations) get treated like girly girls by other people so conform to it?

All the Emmas I know have very similar personalities, dito Olivias and Julies and Daves

am familiar with books and cover yes!and if a book's protagonist were Sebestain I would still think parent's cant spell
