I've decided at the ripe old age of 30ish (ok, 38) that I'm gonna change my name.

Want something short (1 syllable, max. 2)

like Kathy but can't have that. Like Kim but dh doesn't.

Nothing beginning with A

Nothing wacky or made up, or too 'of an era' eg Tracey.

So, any ideas?

Oh well done. Laura is lovely, it is my cousin's name.

I do know another one though that gets shortened to Loz

DumbledoresGirl · 04/02/2009 12:30

Good choice.

sep1712 · 04/02/2009 14:15

Great name, my friend laura gets shortened to auntie ra ra by godchildren.

Umlellala · 04/02/2009 19:57

My sister is Auntie Ra Ra too

Congrats - you won't regret it.

MmeLindt · 04/02/2009 21:08

I am glad that you decided on Laura, it is my favourite of the ones that you had on the shortlist.

Congratulations!

Are you having a renaming party?

pureeandpearls · 04/02/2009 21:28

Congratulations LauratheBavarian soon to be LauratheSurbiton-ian!!

I love Auntie RaRa- too sweet!

Shitemum · 05/02/2009 11:58

hmm, glad you're happy with your choice but -i think Jenny would have given you more scope for nicknames and I think Laura is wet. Sorry!

ErnestTheBavarian · 05/02/2009 12:01

did you really write that?

Ok, well, at 38, I don't feel too much need for nicknames.

But thanks for your constructive comments. Good to know I've had a shit name for 38 years, and I've now chosen a wet one, iyo!

MmeLindt · 05/02/2009 12:03

Ah, don't listen to her. Laura is a lovely name and not at all wet.

Don't take name advice from someone calles Shitemum

What did your DH say? Is he ok with Laura?

Shitemum · 05/02/2009 12:06

sorry, maybe it's just the Lauras I've known....
I know what it's like to have a difficult name, my foreign surname sounds like something sexual and I have been spelling it for people since I could talk. I also have a posh first name but am not posh myself, as you can probably tell.
Sorry for being rude, I hope you'll be very happy in your new incarnation as Laura.

wotulookinat · 05/02/2009 12:21

I love the name Laura.

superfrenchie1 · 05/02/2009 14:01

congratulations, are you going to add Laura as a middle name, or keep your existing frumpy name as a middle name as some suggested? sounds sensible. i'm sure everyone will get used to it. my best friend is Laura (sometimes Loz! or Laur)

i changed the spelling of my name when i was about 10 from boring uk spelling to french spelling (think emily to emilie or ann to anne) and it stuck and i've been spelling it like that ever since - banks etc all have the 'new' spelling and that's how my friends know me, but legally (birth certificate) they still have the old spelling.

anyway the point is thanks to this thread i might take the plunge and change it by deed poll so everything is all aligned.

anyway sorry for rambling, best of luck!

EyeballsintheSky · 05/02/2009 14:11

My cousin would come come and knock seven colours out of anyone that called her wet, in a ladylike way, of course

So Laura, what did you used to be called?

FairLadyRantALot · 05/02/2009 14:26

Here's to your new name! I think you've chosen a lovely one. Well done for going for it.

FairLadyRantALot · 06/02/2009 14:53

oops, missed that you already decided...I like Laura....especially if you are in Germany...because then it's Lou (as in ouch) -rah...

SuzeMcG · 06/02/2009 17:48

Congrats on your new name. Laura is very pretty.

Suzanne (not annoying!)

jemart · 06/02/2009 19:38

Does your existing name lend itself to abbreviation or some variant of itself?
I've never been that keen on my name either but find it extremely hard to imagine myself as anyone else IYSWIM

Otherwise you could always go by a middle name instead? I have an uncle who has gone by his middle name since early childhood because his christain name was so ghastly.

ErnestTheBavarian · 07/02/2009 06:55

No middle name. I was supposed to be Helen.

Shortly after my birth I turned blue. Doctors thought hole in heart, alerted my mum, everything went Pete Tong, they grabbed a priest and had me baptized on the spot thinking I was a gonner. In the panic, mum forgot Helen, and gave me her name ( thanks for the dreary old lady name mum) and no middle name.

As it happens, when they engaged their brains, they realised I was just blue from being bloomin freezing cold, no dramatic hole in the heart or anything. So I've suffered all my life with a hideous name, and the same one as my mum, which is a total pain, for no good reason.

As yet, dh has told me he has changed my name on his phone, but has yet to call me it.

The most positive people in this are you lot and my dcs

Ernestthebavarian - go for it! What is the point of being miserable and embarrased? I know 2 people who have legally changed their first names and no one batted an eyelid and used their new names from the point of change.

Buda · 07/02/2009 10:50

Hi Laura! Pleased to 'meet' you!

I voted for Laura as DS was to be Laura but didn't co-operate!

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 07/02/2009 10:51

lauraloola · 07/02/2009 14:51
