My DW and I were completely settled on Blythe as the name for our 2nd DD until a dinner party at my parents when it got roundly slated by all in attendance. She's two weeks old now and we can't come up with another name we like as much. Before we 'stick it to the man' and go with it we want to try to understand what the haters don't like about it. Any insight?

i'm sorry, i don't like it, it doesn't sound like a girls name, nor a boys come to think about it.

bodiddly · 17/01/2009 21:16

It sounds a little American .. perhaps that is the reason? It is the surname of a friend of ours as well.

Clary · 17/01/2009 21:17

How rude of people to slate it if you have actually called her it!

Or is she still Baby?

It wouldn't be my choice - maybe because it seems like a surname (Gilbert Blythe) but OTOH it has a lovely meaning.
Blythe Danner is Gwyneth's mum isn't she?

You'll never pick a name everyone likes so should just go with your choice.

At least it's easy to say and not too made-up sounding.

CarGirl · 17/01/2009 21:17

Sorry it just makes me think of the town Blyth which isn't the nicest I'm afraid.

nappyaddict · 17/01/2009 21:20

I like it.

brightonlad · 17/01/2009 21:20

My mum mentioned the town blythe, apparently it's some grim little place near Hull?
Have that many people really heard of it?

PeppermintPatty · 17/01/2009 21:21

I love it
But it is unusual so you are more likely to get comments about it and some people who hate it.
But if you and your DW really love it then go for it. It's your decision after all not your parents.

MrsDoylesMole · 17/01/2009 21:21

I like it very much.

Aitch · 17/01/2009 21:22

i like it, and considered it for dds 1 and 2. it was roundly hated, for reasons that i cannot understand.

SheWillBeLoved · 17/01/2009 21:22

I don't like it, sorry. It's not a very pretty looking or sounding name. Seems more fitting as a surname rather than a little girls name.

choosyfloosy · 17/01/2009 21:23

I think it's lovely. Aren't people funny.

Klaw · 17/01/2009 21:23

I LOVE it!Blythe Duff is the actress in Taggart a Scottish Cop series, and to me she is a stunning actress. She has a conker of a nose and is not conventionally good looking but there's something about her that I think is absolutely beautiful.

Gwynneth Paltrow's mum is called Blythe.

Go for it!

mazzystartled · 17/01/2009 21:23

there is also blythe duff off taggart

and a town near newcastle and a village near stoke

i think it might be something to do with the sound of the word - one very long syllable

but i think those who dislike it will get over it when its the name of their gorgeous granddaughter/niece/whatever.

Lubyloo · 17/01/2009 21:24

I like it too

allnewcontrolfreaky · 17/01/2009 21:28

blythe spirit?
blythe(burgh) in suffolk?

.... doesn't really sound like a name to me.... but if you like it have the courage of your convictions.

MrsMattie · 17/01/2009 22:28

You did ask, so...I think it's utterly awful. Just such a horrid name. Sorry.

brightonlad · 17/01/2009 22:46

But why? Why the strong reactions? How can it polarize people so much?

PoloPlayingMummy · 17/01/2009 23:04

I think it's a really lovely name. If you love it, use it and don't let others put you off!

scrooged · 17/01/2009 23:05

Isn't it a place in Newcastle?

WhatsTheBloodyPoint · 17/01/2009 23:06

Will she be a ballet dancer? If not, then give it a miss.

Whilst also thinking, call your child what you like.

puppydetox · 17/01/2009 23:06

it's a kind of doll too.

brightonlad · 17/01/2009 23:19

Those dolls are v. creepy!

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 17/01/2009 23:20

I think she looks pretty

hester · 17/01/2009 23:22

It wouldn't be my choice, but I don't see anything wrong with it at all. Ignore them.

SheWillBeLoved · 17/01/2009 23:26

Brightonlad - it's not a common name. I've never heard of it before today, most people won't have. The unknown is scary especially for people have prefer a more traditional route when it comes to names. Whatever name we pick for our child - i'd be gutted if everyone liked it to be honest Just as i'd be gutted if I liked every single name that someone threw at me!

If you love it - stick with it. She's your child, it's your decision. Don't let other peoples opinions put you off something you feel strongly about.
