My DW and I were completely settled on Blythe as the name for our 2nd DD until a dinner party at my parents when it got roundly slated by all in attendance. She's two weeks old now and we can't come up with another name we like as much. Before we 'stick it to the man' and go with it we want to try to understand what the haters don't like about it. Any insight?

Love love love it. Wanted either Blythe or Linnet for DC2 but he turned out to be Hugh!

MrsY · 27/01/2009 22:28

Blythe is lovely.

Ignore the silly people at the dinner party.

brightonlad....you ask why people have such strong reactions...because it's a nmae and everyone is a critic....

it is very unusual, and would not be my choice of name, because it doesn't really sound feminine to me, iykwim...

however, if you really love it...just go with it....there are certainly much worse anmes out there......such as Agnes/Gertrude/Barbara (well, those are awful imo....)

My dd's a Blythe, needless to say I love the name. I don't expect everyone else to love it, much as I may not always care for their choice of names.

OneLieIn · 30/01/2009 12:04

love it

NizzyNoodles · 30/01/2009 22:55

I like it too but it would never have got past DH so we've not used it. Unusual but not in fruitloop way.

nannygirl · 30/01/2009 22:59

love it. really unusual but distinctive.

WinkyWinkola · 30/01/2009 23:01

Lovely lovely name. Gentle and elegant.

kitty78 · 02/02/2009 15:32

I think its fabulous. Does she look like a Blythe? Is there anything else you could imagine calling her?

OrmIrian · 02/02/2009 15:33

V nice.

I think Blythe is a beautiful name. Like you, I can't quite understand why it provokes such strong negative reactions from some people. To me, it's unusual, feminine, pretty, simple, classy... really love it! In fact this thread is making me consider it for DC2, though not sure it works with my surname

It appears as a first name (both male and female) on every English census from 1841 onwards (68 times in the 1901 census) so it is also quite traditional, though not common even then. Go for it!

Its a beautiful, name go with it.

TheGoddessBlossom · 02/02/2009 20:54

I really really like it. Isn't it in Anne of green gables too? I think it is gorgeous, really elegant. Go for it.

monkeycat · 02/02/2009 20:57

I love it . I really wanted it for DD2 but DH wasn't keen .

I think it's really pretty , but not too girlie .

Go for it .

I know a Blythe and she's lovely, so I really like the name (good associations). I also like the semantic associations with happiness. I like Felicity as a name for the same reason, although it is probably deeply unfashionable these days.

crankytwanky · 02/02/2009 21:13

Lovely name.
