My DW and I were completely settled on Blythe as the name for our 2nd DD until a dinner party at my parents when it got roundly slated by all in attendance. She's two weeks old now and we can't come up with another name we like as much. Before we 'stick it to the man' and go with it we want to try to understand what the haters don't like about it. Any insight?

I LOVE Blythe. Please choose it if you like it, people will soon associate it with your little one and love it too.

blithe
?adjective, blithâ‹…er, blithâ‹…est.

  1. joyous, merry, or gay in disposition; glad; cheerful: Everyone loved her for her blithe spirit.

Was she born on a Sunday?

"But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay. "

I love Blythe - it's a classic, beautiful name with a lovely meaning. And a nice change from all the Eves, Millies, Ellas around these days.

But more importantly, its your baby so YOU must be happy with your choice. You will never please everyone - we (thankfully) all have different tastes!

DevilsAdvocaat · 18/01/2009 09:56

call your dd this name if you like it.
she will suit it, you will be pleased you chose it, people will get used to it and after a few months they won't be able to imagine her being called anything else.

Well, if I was at the dinner party and you asked me why i didn't like it. I'd have to say:

It's quite an ugly name - very 'surnamey' very American and unfeminine.

salvadory · 18/01/2009 16:32

I LOVE the name Blythe, really pretty, not common at all would suit a child or a grown woman, like nn Bee also. It's one I've considered and much better than ANOTHER Amelie/Ellie. Actually quite similar sounding to Eve which most Mnetters seem to love but better (in my opinion) as not on every under 3 year old. Do it, you'll be glad you did.

yellowflowers · 18/01/2009 17:11

oooh- Blythe is lovely

MrsMattie · 18/01/2009 17:12

made up, porn star name

LadyLiffey · 18/01/2009 17:36

I quite like it. But I like Olwen and Gwynneth and Bronwen too.

Blythe....... it's different not try-hard. It's not pretty-frou-frou but it's not harsh either. I could see that this would tick boxes for someone looking for something quirky but sane.

LadyLiffey · 18/01/2009 17:38

I thought it was Welsh??

Leo9 · 18/01/2009 18:39

Blythe is an absolutely beautiful name

Go for it!

Ignore those people, whaddo they know

This is one of the best names ever. It's lovely and as others have said has the most lovely meaning.

meandjoe · 18/01/2009 19:50

love it, please don't be put off, if everyone liked the same names and followed trends then we'd all be called britney or callum by now. go for it!!!!!!!!!

yemmaly · 18/01/2009 20:41

I think it is actually a similar style to Britney.
Dare I say chav?
sorry

peterbaldy · 18/01/2009 20:50

Had this on my shortlist for bubs along with Blair.
Ignore them on here, You only get the seal of approval if you want to use Jack or Olivia sort of names.

stillenacht · 18/01/2009 20:51

Blythe - unusual and nice. I know a Blythe

wrinklytum · 18/01/2009 20:57

Do you know,I don't go for unusual names (DD has a "Popular" name but I actually quite like this.

IIRC there is an actress with this name (Blythe Duff)I have heard he interviewed and warmed to her(Scottish,in Taggart, largeish nose but quite attractive in an unconventional way)

I think it is a lovely yet unusual name and if you like it go for it

jeanjeannie · 18/01/2009 20:58

Oh and Blythe is lovely and you both like it Plus, you keep coming back to it.

I've got two DDs and people have reactions to their names all the time and it's not like they're that unusual (Iris & Verity) When Verity was born we really divided the family But so what - WE love both names and that's all that matters!

babyneris · 18/01/2009 21:05

Chavtastical, it wouldn't be my choice.

stillenacht · 18/01/2009 21:06

I don't think Blythe is chavtastic at all.

babyneris · 18/01/2009 21:07

That's your opinion, I think it is

stillenacht · 18/01/2009 21:09

Of course and thats yours. A family i know who have a Blythe are quite bohemian and posh. Lovely lovely family.

babyneris · 18/01/2009 21:22

The Blythe I know isn't from a posh family.
Why being from a posh family should make a name acceptable though I've no idea.

FrannyandZooey · 18/01/2009 21:26

i love it - ds2's middle name is blythe
means happy - great name imo
