Completely hatstand

allnewcontrolfreaky · 16/01/2009 18:22

..... always liked trilby .... for a boy, obviously

bananapaddlepop · 16/01/2009 18:23

Cumberbund

Grammaticus · 16/01/2009 18:23

It's a hat! Do you mean Theodora?

Kwini · 16/01/2009 18:24

Nope, I definitely meant Fedora. It is indeed an Italian hat, but also a Russian girl's name...

Kwini · 16/01/2009 18:25

Trilby's actually a girl's name, Allnew - based on the title character from the novel by George du Maurier

Drusilla · 16/01/2009 18:27

I think everyone will assume you didn't know it was a hat

cyteen · 16/01/2009 18:27

I used to work for a well-known examining board and there was a Fedora on their database. Whenever I saw it I made this face

kateus · 21/01/2009 15:59

Imagine finding yourself having to explain that 'yes you know it's a hat, but in Russia it's a girl's name...' for the fiftieth time - you'll get fed up doing that and probably wonder why you didn't call her Jane!
And also think of the hilarious people who'll be asking you what you'll be calling the next one - Homburg? Bobble?
If I ever meet a girl called Fedora, I promise to say what a lovely Russian name it is! Good luck with your weeny one xxx

hunkermunker · 21/01/2009 16:00

Just call her Hattie.

wheresthehamster · 21/01/2009 16:01

lol at Hattie!

GrimmaTheNome · 21/01/2009 16:01

Its also the name of a free version of the Linux operating system (I suppose related to Red Hat).

Sorry - it sounds like a lovely name but its ruined by association with hats and geeks.

wastingmyeducation · 21/01/2009 16:01

Fez for short?

duchesse · 21/01/2009 16:15

or Panama?

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 16:22

There are going to be a LOT of Baracks this year...

ThingOne · 21/01/2009 16:32

Yep -it's a hat or an operating system. One to avoid IMO.

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 16:34

Isn't it a tennis player? No that's Federer.

Kwini · 23/01/2009 14:42

Hee...as it happens, my name is Trilby and I love it! I do get a few people asking if it's after the hat, but the intelligent ones tend to have heard of the book as well

Fedora was my nickname at uni.

Do you mean your surname?

so potentially your dd would be Fedora Trilby?

I beg of you, no..........................

Kwini · 23/01/2009 14:50

No, it's my first name. Our last name is very normal.

OP posts:
Oovavu · 23/01/2009 14:53

ah I see, so you're just keen on hats as you have a vested interest as it were. Well, it's your baby and your choice, so if you like it, go for it! But it will be commented on (esp as you are both named after types of hats), so if you are at all sensitive about it, or easily bored of 'jokes' about it, then I'd avoid it really. Will your dd thank you for it when she's older?

stillenacht · 23/01/2009 14:55

Fedora - not meaning to sound rude but it sounds like a female contraception

Katw3kitts · 23/01/2009 14:56

Oh no ......

There's already one Barack near me .... made it to the local news

wastingmyeducation · 23/01/2009 15:01

What will you call your son? Bowler?

wastingmyeducation · 23/01/2009 15:02

Actually, Trilby is a lovely name, but I don't like Fedora, sorry.
