Name combination suggestions?

So it is our first, and we found out that we are having a boy. I know there is plenty of time to choose a name, but we both are thinking about it now and think it would be nice to know who we are talking to!

We are both in our mid-late 30s and really don't want anything way out or wacky. We like the traditional names really, although am concerned about the popularity of some now.

So the options we have are

James - this seems to be the one we both instinctively liked best. It is also my Dads name and my grandads (on mums side) name so very traditional in my family. But - very popular.

Andrew - DHs name - probably don't want as a first name, but would be nice as middle name

George - DHs middle name. I like this, but DH is not sure.

Elijah - we both sort of liked this but not really sure.

Then a few other options like Jack and Oliver that we are vaguely tossing around.

So what do you think?

I think James Andrew sounds a nice combination.

the last name of the babe will be our two names joined, beginning with an M by the way.

I meant to say, I really quite want to have Andrew in there somewhere, so whatever we have needs to go with that as a middle name.

What about 'Andrew James' but call him 'Drew'?

All your choices are great. You may change your mind once ds arrives tho. So leave your final decision until lo arrives.

Congratulations

Drew is my cousin, so thats out.

We don't want Andrew as a first name, I have never liked the having the same name for parent and child thing, I wouldn't really want the same intial either actually!

I know we have plenty of time, and yes, we won't make a final decision until he is here - but its still fun to think about!

Both James and Andrew are lovely names. Just check the initials don't spell anything you'd regret.

To add to your other options list:
David
Justin
Nicholas
Francis
Laurence

From the names you have given, I think George Andrew + M-surname sounds like the best combination. Flows better than Jack Andrew or Oliver Andrew or Elijah Andrew (IMO!)

Any chance of Andrew James, and calling him James in practice? Although A. James might sound a bit author like, I think you do need to think about initials. He's not going to thank you for lumbering him with "JAM", for example. (this may seem minor, but try spending 15 years in a law firm being known by your initials, as is generally the case. I have come across some terrible examples). Otherwise, I think that one syllable for the first name is probably the go if you have a double-barrelled surname, otherwise it's all going to be a bit of a mouthful.

Of the other options I think George goes better with Andrew. What about Mark? Children hardly ever seem to be called Mark any more. wonder why?

What about

William Andrew
Fredrick Andrew
Christoper Andrew

I hadn't thought about the initials. JAM...Hmmmm.

The surname initials would be M-V (2-1 syllables) and I agree about a simple and short first name because of that. Do you think it would be JAM/GAM or would it end up JAV?

I'm going off James just a bit now since DH said 'oh yes, and we'll call him Jimmy...' Oh no, we won't!

Oh this is all such a minefield - what a responsibilty to choose a name and not lumber the poor mite with something dreadful/common/tasteless/ridiculous/embarrassing/dated/too popular/bad initially/meaning something rude in another language etc etc!

PS Mark is out - MILs evil cat is called Mark. No way is my little boy being called after that incarnation of the devil creature!

James - a bit too popular for me

Andrew - I like this - underused imo.

George - again a bit too popular for me.

Elijah - love it.

Then a few other options like Jack and Oliver - again very popular.

So Elijah Andrew it is
