Josephine.

She hates it so much she prefers to tell people her middle name is Jane, or pretend she doesn't have one at all.

Luckily she loves her first name.

let her lie for now, my poor son's have unpronouncable middle names (Zbigniew and Mieszko) to which everyone just goes eh? to when they are told them.

They too can lie if it makes their teen years any easier.

Then when she is older she will appreciate it for the beautiful name it is

GrimmaTheNome · 07/01/2009 19:59

Tell her to just use her initial. (Thats what I always did) If she really hates her middle name, even the abbreviations, then let her use Jane for now - why not?

BTW, noonki - how do you pronounce Zbigniew? There's someone work-related I only know by email and I really am baffled.

I have a French niece with that name. She is 18, stunning and very cool headed and in control. She freaks me out a bit tbh.

I don't think you need get too hung up about a middle name really, it's practically never used for anything. Still by the same token if she truly hates it, I suppose it isn't that awful to change it?

Wallace · 07/01/2009 20:12

When i was that age i wanted to be called Samantha Josephine and be Sammy Jo for short...

Squirdle · 07/01/2009 20:22

My middle name is Grace and I used to hate it with a passion...but I absolutely love it now!

Tell her she may not like it now, but in a few years she will probably love it. Anyway, tis only her middle name so not many people need to know it if she doesn't want them to.

BonsoirAnna · 07/01/2009 20:27

My mother's middle name is Joan. She hated it so much that she used to write Jane instead.

She got over it .

BikeRunSki · 07/01/2009 20:30

I love it and agree that I all children hate their middle names. I hated mine (very unusual, if not unique and also pretended not to have one or substituted another more common name with the same initial. Overcompensated with DS and am waiting for him to be old enough to tell me that he hates his middle names because they are too boring.

duchesse · 07/01/2009 20:33

Ooh, Flightattendant, you've got me thinking now. I actually can't remember what it was she wanted to be called when she was 5, but is was something really embarrassing like Dannii. At least that's what I'll be telling her... She had an imaginary friend named Bella when she was 2 (before the Tweenies, I hasten to say!).

Janeite- I think some people may find their names a little poncey, for want of a better word... I'm really glad some people like them!

I wanted to be called Josephine when I was little- I liked it far more than my actual (uncommon) name which I loath.
May have had something to do with Joey Maynard of course

well my middle name is CHristine and it never bothered me tbh at any stage in my life. In fact I think I prefer it to my first name

faeriemoo · 07/01/2009 22:41

I love Josephine. It's such a pretty name.

TooMuchMakkaPakka · 13/01/2009 01:09

i hated my middle name at that age but rather like it now (it was on the long shortlist for DD). i think its something to be cross with your parents about when you're a teenager frankly (god knows what my DD will make of her two middle names?!)

she will probably be the same. tell her to use the initial.

KristinaM · 13/01/2009 01:24

I'm confused - what are you asking?

do mumsnetters like the name?

is she being reasonabel to dislike it?

should she be allowed to change it or not use it?

christywhisty · 13/01/2009 01:52

I never got a middle name, would have loved one
