Amelie?

Still on the hunt for a name we love for DD3 (due in 5 weeks) and on reading the thread about beautiful girls names, Amelie has stood out.

DH likes it BUT thinks we would have a lifetime of people saying "What, Emily? and us replying "FFS, NO AMELIE!".

Opinions please!

I love Amelie and think it doesn't matter that you are not french, providing that you have a soft sounding surname. I think it does jarr a bit if your surname is harsh sounding. Also, these days people take their names from all over - you don't have to be Irish to have a Niamh or a Siobhan and so I think the same principle applies...

It is a beautiful name if you have got the right surname to pull it off.

estuaryfairy · 29/12/2008 22:04

pgwithnumber3, my Amelie's middle name is Faye, also French (must have been the almond croissant craving I had when pregnant...), which means fairy. As I posted earlier on the thread, I thought the meaning of Amelie was beloved, but it's actually industrious or hard working, but at least I got the fairy bit right . IMHO a one-syllable middle name works best with a three-syllable first name (although xp says calling her by her first and middle name together makes it sound like trailer trash) . Anyway, her grandpa is happy as Faye is the name of his aunt who brought him up, although she was known as Aunt Fanny , t'was back in the day, mind.

Too associated with the McCann family for me.

Pinkjennybellrock · 30/12/2008 15:53

Pgwithnumber3 - I know an Amelie, and she did have a few 'no, not Emily' issues to start with, but everyone is pretty much used to it now.

Lovely name.

stillstanding · 30/12/2008 15:56

I think Amelie is lovely and suspect that you would get a lot less of the Emily stuff since the Amelie movie came out. Go for it!

Lulumama · 30/12/2008 15:58

we do spell it Amélie, with the accent. our surname also has an accent so that was another reason we gave it her as a middle name as too confusing and misspelt so often

pgwithnumber3 · 30/12/2008 20:40

estuaryfairy! OMG, we decided today to use Faye as a middle name! How spooky is that!? I went through the name book at my mum's and wanted a one syllable name that began with a consonant, Faye was the one that we ended up with! Does it mean Fairy, I didn't take much notice of the meaning, how lovely.

Lulu, I was wondering whether to use the accent or not, I am not sure we will tbh. How you doing?

am goo dthanks, busy with birthing ladies, but have a quiet spell looming . hope you are ok? will see you in the new year ?

estuaryfairy · 30/12/2008 21:23

pgwithnumber3, Faye means fairy, so Amelie Faye means industrious fairy. Anyway, it's a beautiful name whatever the meaning. I didn't/wouldn't bother with the accent when using it as a first name, unless you have an accented surname, like Lulumama. Don't think the accent is neccessary if you're not French, IYSWIM. Glad there's another hardworking fairy MN babe around, when they're old enough, they might even have their own topic .

pgwithnumber3 · 30/12/2008 21:23

I'm fine, getting a bit more tired, trying to sort DD2's new room out (DD3 will have her bedroom) and it it taking ages as DH has been working non-stop and what with Christmas etc. Just need him to move cot and finish wardrobe and will be sorted. Hate chaos though, god help me with 3!

Only 5 weeks to go, can't believe it!

Have a great New Year, do you have any plans? We are going to my friend's (who you met at mine) with DD1, DD2 is staying with my Mum and Dad for the night.

glad DH is busy ! we are going to fancy dress musical quiz evening at a friends.... hope you have a lovely time ! text me when your phone is sorted

pgwithnumber3 · 30/12/2008 21:26

Wasn't Tinkerbelle a hardworking fairy?! I call DD2 Tinkerbelle, how funny to pick a name that matches her nickname so well.

Hardworking Fairy, I LOVE IT!

I agree re the accent, it never came into my head until Lulu mentioned it.

Phone is all sorted again now Lulu. DH busy but not earning enough iyswim to maintain what we have to pay out. At least he is getting work though. Am very grateful.

Lulumama · 30/12/2008 21:29

well, it is something isn;t it? glad phone is fine. if mine was not able to text i'd be a shrivelled , gibbering heap in the corner !

pgwithnumber3 · 30/12/2008 21:37

I hardly ever use my phone, it probably gets used to text about 5 times a week, I just cannot be arsed! I would rather ring people when I am doing the housework and chat. Gabby Annie me. Text too impersonal but it is fine for quick messages to just say Hello, how are you etc.

Oh yes, we are glad that he is getting work although it looks like we may have fell out with a couple who are good friends. DH's friend asked him to do some labouring/grafting work and DH moved 24 tonnes of rubble in 2 days out of a cellar, knocked down walls and put steel up etc and his friend only paid him £55 a day (9 hour day). DH nearly damaged his back and ankle doing it and is absolutely livid. He won't even speak to him at the moment, he is so let down by him. A builder would charge at least £1000 for doing work like that. Talk about take advantage of someone when they are down.

OP posts:
Lulumama · 30/12/2008 21:38

that is farking ridicolous. you find out who your real friends are , donpt you, when the chips are down.

i can;t talk in the day as DD pulls at the phone and demands to talk to whoever it is, and then has to have a really detailed long conversation.

pgwithnumber3 · 30/12/2008 21:48

He didn't do it alone, had another couple of lads there but DH will have done the bulk of work, he is a total grafter. His mate who paid him this measly sum (who was supposed to help as well) spent all day on his phone. Opened DH's eyes put it that way. Also his fiancee is a friend of mine and on one of the days DH was working, she went for a colonic irrigation(!) and asked me if I could mind 6 children (my 2, her 2 and 2 of her DD's friends) while she went! 2 days before Christmas, like I don't have enough to do. Here's me, 8 months pregnant, having to drive 1 hour to get home from their house and she wanted me to mind 6 kids for 3 hours. FUCK OFF! I was fuming, they are selfish and it took this for us to realise that. No friends of ours.

OP posts:
Lulumama · 30/12/2008 21:53

you are better off without some 'friends', aren;t you? they think because you are struggling, you shoudl be patehtically grateful for any 'help'

pffffffffffffft

they'll be sorry when you and DH are on the up again and better than ever.

Hulababy · 30/12/2008 21:54

Amelie is a very pretty name. I like it.

Dottoressa · 30/12/2008 21:57

It sounds like the way DD used to say 'animal' to me.

Moreover, it is becoming very, very common (and possibly even a bit chavvy - no offence intended: that may just be where I live). I would give it a miss ...

pgwithnumber3 · 30/12/2008 21:58

Oh they are definitely the type of "friends" who will gloat when we have to sell our lovely house etc. Don't need people like that in our lives whatsoever. Even though we thought his friend was doing DH a favour and I must have said 5 times how grateful I was, I was soon brought back down to earth when DH brought back his "wages" on Christmas Eve. I cried. Bastards.

Thanks Hulababy!!

nula · 30/12/2008 22:27

very cute name

pgwithnumber3 · 30/12/2008 22:45

Well I am not a chav so I think we will be okay Dottoressa.

OP posts:
Dottoressa · 30/12/2008 23:30

As I say, it may just be ever so slightly chavvy where I live. You will be fine so long as you don't move house!

Dottoressa · 30/12/2008 23:31

(I do love Amelia, though - and it's also v popular...)
