Twin names

I'm expecting twins, early days yet and we don't know the sex. We already have a 3yr old son who has a very traditional ordinary Scottish name, not in or out of fashion!!, however we will need names for our twins depending on gender. For girls, we like Xanthe and Alexandra, are these too samey and will Xanthe sound a little "way out" culturally wrong with our surname. I also like Alexander for a boy, possibly with the Scottish shortening of "Sandy".( Dad is Scottish). For girls we also liked last time (singleton) pregnancy Isla or Iona, would these sound too naff together. I really want to give my twins separate identities as I'm a twin myself and we had different but quite rhyming longer names. Our surname is a Scottish borders two syllable name beginning with L.Any ideas appreciated please!!

I love Xanthe and think it would be lovely with Alexander

I love both Isla and Iona too - both very pretty and not too popular (around my part of England anyhow)

Friends of mine have Euan and Ella?

Dottoressa · 27/12/2008 21:30

If I had twins, they would be Gertie and Gus.

I'm Scottish and I know two families (who don't know each other) who both have a Xanthe and an India.

I think Xanthe would be fine. I like Alexandra but prefer Alexa.

I think Isla and Iona are nice but maybe too similar?

Are your twins identical? or do you need boy/girl combinations too?

I have a Toby and strong;y considered Alexander for dc3 as I think Toby and Alex go very nicely.

Also Alexander/Finlay (Sandy/Finn)
Toby/Finlay

(or is your ds called Finlay )

wrinklytum · 27/12/2008 21:35

I think they are all lovely,I love Scottish names,my ds has one

My fav boys names as well as the ones you posted

Cameron
Ross
Fraser
Struan
Rowan
(DS'S is in there)

I also like Donald,I know its old fashioned but my best mate at Uni was a Fifer called Donald and a Top Bloke

All the girls names are pretty

Thanks for some brilliant suggestions. The twins are non-identical. We do have some boy names in mind. Our girl names come from our last list. The trouble is that you would like some sense of individuality but also want to use names that "work together". Our names on our previous list include some like Iona or Isla that we would have used one of ( not as first and middle names) and quite often you do like similar sounding names. We
are not finding out the sex which will make life even more interesting(difficult!!) I love Finlay but there are quite a few around here. DS is named after a patron saint!!Thanks for your time and great efforts.

OMHO I dont like twin names that rhyme or have the same initial. My boys dont, not even similar. We even gave the second twin the name that was alphabeticaly first so he wont feel like the second choice when they call the register out in school. Hopefully he will be first to be called. We also gave DT2 our second favorite choice for a middle name (named after my lovely, sadly died too young, nephew). If it was a girl it would've also been a middle name.

dizzydixies · 27/12/2008 23:01

we have an Alexandra nn Lexie which I love

what about Eilidh?

Fimbo · 27/12/2008 23:04

Campbell & Struan for boys

Ailsa & Iona for girls

dizzydixies · 27/12/2008 23:04

or Fionn instead of Finlay?

HarktheheraldAnglepoise · 28/12/2008 13:51

Love all your names so far.

Isla and Mona?
Iona and Orla?

If I had twins I would call them Vulva and Volvo

Shoshe · 28/12/2008 14:02

What about Iona and Skye both Scottish Islands.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 28/12/2008 14:04

I just wouldn't be able to resist some kind of connection between names myself.

Eg
Robin (Rob/Rab nn for a boy), Jay
Linnet, Wren, Paloma

mumoverseas · 28/12/2008 20:14

My DH suggests Jack and Danny but think he is being smutty as where he comes from in sarf London it is rhyming slang for something!
love Iona and Skye though for girls

thatsnotmymonster · 28/12/2008 20:31

Sholto and Struan
Leo and Max

Did you ever read the Rannah books? weren't there twins called Lorn and Lewis? I really like those names.

Orla and Morven
Flora and Isla
Caitlin and Rosie

My dh's choice is Jessica and Anna
