DP doesn't really like any of the girls names I've come up with - can you give me fresh inspiration?

Well it's naming time again and it's always a bit tricky because we're a bilingual family. I've been making lists of potential names, I think we're getting somewhere with boys names. Girls, however, names is providing a bit of a challenge.

DP doesn't like any of the names I've come up with and hasn't had any ideas himself yet. The only one we both like (ish) is Renata, but neither of us is wild about it... Luckily I'm not due until the beginning of June.

I'm hoping you good ladies can provide a bit of fresh inspiration and help! Here, in no particular order, is my girls list, just for an idea of the sort of thing I seem to go for...

Mathilda
Vivienne
Cordelia
Natascha
Saskia
Ramona
Natalia
Otillie
Elodie
Rosalie
Madelief
Renata
Olivia/olive
Leonora
Eugenia
Audrey
Josephine
Maeve
Amelia
Dulcie
Jemima
Clarissa
Tahlia
Claudia
Mable

DD is Isabella, luckily it's not at all popular here (Holland) ATM

So, is anyone up for a challenge?

Does he think the names you like are a bit unusual. Would he feel more comfortable with more ordinary names? What names does he like?

NorktasticNinja · 24/12/2008 18:22

He doesn't have any ideas for girls so far! Normal Dutch and normal British names are two very different animals, which is part of the problem.

We both agree that we'd like something 'known' but not too popular (here). I feel an international type name is important but DP thinks that's nutty...

TBH it is really making me hope DC2 turns out to be a boy.

To give you an idea of what he does find acceptable, here are the boys names we both like, in no particular order:

Stanley
Cassius
Felix
Caspar
Miles
Eliot
Tobias

We may not actually use any of these, but still it gives an idea. Personally I really don't think there is much difference (stylistically) between these boys names and the type of girls names I put to the vote. Clearly there must be

What about Mieke for a girl? It's my Dutch bf's DD's name and I love it.

NorktasticNinja · 24/12/2008 18:42

Mieke is sweet, coincidentally it's also the name of the midwife who buggered up DDs birth...

It's pretty much unpronounceable from text in English too, which is a problem with a lot of Dutch names we like.

Mathilda - nms
Vivienne - adore this
Cordelia - very nice, quite posh
Natascha - prefer Natalia
Saskia - nms
Ramona - okay but would be put off by nn possibilities Ram and Mona.
Natalia - beautiful
Otillie - again gorgeous
Elodie - not a fan
Rosalie - I really like this, was on my shortlist but had DS, bit gypsyish
Madelief - nms
Renata - ok
Olivia/olive - nms
Leonora - my mn is Annora and was teased at school and called Nora Batty
Eugenia - love it
Audrey - great
Josephine - another on my list
Maeve - not keen
Amelia - a little dull
Dulcie - nn Dull?
Jemima - put off by the offence taken in US to this name
Clarissa - nice, rather grown up, Clari as nn?
Tahlia - nms
Claudia - nice but I don't like the meaning, 'lame'
Mable - love Mabel

Basically I think this is a fabulous list so not much help from me as you're not convinced by any of them...sorry OK thinking hard for alternatives... Katia, Helena, Lydia???

Dottoressa · 24/12/2008 19:47

I'd say they were of a similar stylee. My DS's name is on your list, and one of the possibilities is also there, so I think we have similar tastes!

That said, if I had another DS, I would call him Augustus, Horatio, Humphrey or Emmanuel (though DH and my parents would all veto this, not least on the grounds that none of us has ever set foot in a church).

Ideally, I would like about ten children so I could find homes for all my favourite names!

Happy hunting...

puffling · 24/12/2008 19:52

Would he like a female version of any of the boys' names he likes
e.g. Felix-Felicity
Cassius-Cassandra

or Elinor/Eleanor

I give up now. Can't imagine what a feminine Stanley might be.

puffling · 24/12/2008 19:55

Incidentally, I found this site which gives Dutch names and their English equivalents:
here

NorktasticNinja · 24/12/2008 20:08

audley - I could have written your commentary myself

Except, I'm not sure what nms is...

Dottoressa - I love Humphrey too! Girls and boys names definitely the pretty much same stylee in my mind too.

Puffing - our fussiness know no limits, between us we don't like any of the female equivalents (I'll have a look at thst link).

Sascha
Amelie
Xanthe or Xanthia
India
Savannah
Sophia
Hermione
Harriet
Eve or Evie
Sinead
Eloise
Mabel
Eden

oooh and someone earlier said Amara - haven't heard that in a while.I Think i love it!

Lonnie · 28/12/2008 16:15

I really like Renata and suggested it for our dd1 but dh loathes it..

I would consider though as you mentioned the bilingual issue then Claudia would not be pronounced the same in England and in Holland.. so might be worth considering being bilingual myself it was a big consideration for me I wanted names that was pronounced the same in both languages (didnt get it with ds but I dont mind the
pronounciation in either language)

for suggestions I would say

Karina
Marina
Suzannah
Zanna
Tansy
Arianne
Zia or Nia
