Yes, I know it is the car BUT we are considering Herbert - I like Herbie and Bert. What do you think?

I like Bert. I'd call him Albert for some gravity in adult life.

I do like Herbie but I'm thinking of your baby as a grown up and perhaps as a County Court Judge......

dinny · 18/12/2008 19:06

friend has just called her bbay Herbie - VERY CUTE

dinny · 18/12/2008 19:06

Bert reminds me of Bert Baxter from Adrian Mole

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 18/12/2008 19:10

How about Basil, with Herbie as a nickname? Or if you wanted Herbie for a girl, Sage, Sorrel, Saffron?

My DS is Kurt but we call him Burt for short .

I like Herbert, herbie and Bert... Good choice!

mumof2andabit · 18/12/2008 19:20

Someone in my family has 2 sons - albie and herbie. I love it!

Thanks, more positive response than I was expecting - DH says he hates it and the whole world will think we named him after a possessd car!! He wants Montgomery!!!

I want Herbert so we can call him Herbie/Bertie while he is small but he can always grow into the full name.

Well, yeah it DOES make you think of the car but it's still dead cute. i like it.

sleepyeyes · 18/12/2008 22:14

Is your DH a star-trek fan as thats one of the major characters names.
Its also a fairly common Scottish surname.

I like Montgomery rather than herbie.

LaDiDaDi · 18/12/2008 22:38

I prefer Montgomery as I like Monty and Herbie but not Herbet (yuk imo).

SAEJ · 19/12/2008 17:26

DH not a Star Trek fan but a HUGE Star Wars fan hence we have already been over a million reasosn why we not call our DH Luke, Boba, Han, Skywalker etc etc Monty is fine but I feel like Montgomery is a big name for any child and I am loathe to christen a baby with an abbreviation because I feel that children need to be able to grow into teir names as adults.

The only other alternative we have at the moment is Lyndon (my Dads name) or George. This LO will be brother to Charles Lawrence(known as Charlie).

sleepyeyes · 19/12/2008 19:53

LOL I feel your pain my DH favorite BOYs names are Apollo and Valarie.

Lyndon is a lovely name uncommon without being to odd.
George is quite common but still a solid good name and compliments Charles well.

I hate abbreviations too which is such a pain when you like long names. If you dont want your son to be a Monty then I wouldn't call him Montgomery as it will be impossible to stop kids at school etc.

SAEJ · 19/12/2008 20:33

At least he has not suggested Chewbacca yet. . .

Monty is very nice (on my list too!)

Not keen on Herbie but I do like Bert and Bertie

I just think 'Herbie goes bananas' whenever I hear Herbie. Sorry .
