Matilda

DP loves Matilda. I'm not 100% sure, what can I shorten it to? Also we need a middle name as none of our family names are suitable... Mavis for example.

Any suggestions?

Does Charlie and Matilda sound OK?

i think it's a lovely name - pretty popular though.

You could always 'french it up' a bit and go with Matilde

Shortens to Tilly, Mattie, Tilda or most commonly in our household, Tills! Not quite sure how it got to that!

It is apparently pretty popular but I think it depends where you live.

SnowOfHands · 10/12/2008 16:44

My dd is Mathilda Beatrice Rose.

We call her Mathilda. She's 19 months old and calls herself Tilda.

Maude, Tilly, Tilda, Mattie, Mat etc

I don't like Tilly At All though.

MrsMattie · 10/12/2008 16:45

I like Matilda, but Tilly is tired already...every other girl being born this year is called Tilly, surely!

Mattie is much cooler

artichokes · 10/12/2008 16:45

I love it.

MN always says it is popular but I have never met a little Matilda. Not sure its in teh top 100 but you could check.

It means strong female warrior which I think is a good meaning.

You could shorten to Milly, Tilly, Tilda, Mattie... Maude was an old fashioned diminuitive.

largeginandtonic · 10/12/2008 16:45

There you are!!! Mathilda is very cute and a fabulous name too

BlueCowNowIsLowing · 10/12/2008 16:46

LOADS of Mathildas around here! Some full name, others Tilly.

MadreInglese · 10/12/2008 16:47

What about Maeve instead of Mavis?

Matilda Maeve Zebraa

Zebraa · 10/12/2008 16:47

I think that sounds like Matilda with a lisp!

I quite like Tilly, it's very cute and girly.

I'm just being stubborn because I wanted Emma and DP told me under no circumstances!!

Matilda is just lovely.
Till ok, surely, as a nn for a little one, though I prefer Tilda.

SnowOfHands · 10/12/2008 18:07

lg&t, am I still allowed to visit over the festive period? Will you promise to give birth while I'm there?

bessmum · 10/12/2008 18:11

Lovely, Charlie and Matilda sounds perfect to me.

Nancy66 · 10/12/2008 18:20

Much nicer than Emma - apologies to any emmas or mothers of emmas but it's a bit ordinary.

insywinsyspider · 10/12/2008 20:21

Mathilda is lovely, ds1 and ds2 would have been Mathilda but wasn't meant to be we would have shortened it too Mattie as I love girls names that are tomboy ish
why not Mathilda Emma? we would have had Mathilda Claire as thats my middle name - I think it sounds lovely with a very tradional short name in middle - guess it depends on your surname

Donk · 10/12/2008 20:44

"Matilda told such awful lies, it made one gasp and stretch one's eyes"

JingleBellsDennySmells · 10/12/2008 20:45

Matty, Tilly, I love it.

changer22 · 10/12/2008 20:50

Following on from the spelling of names thread, I thought it was Matilda or Mathilde (French, 2 syllables) not Mathilda.

Each to their own though...

pregapuss · 10/12/2008 21:56

I love it.

Hulababy · 10/12/2008 21:58

Matilda is a beautiful name. Love the shortening of Tilly too.

I love the name Charlie as well. My godson is Charles, nn Charlie

PerkinWarbeck · 10/12/2008 21:58

Matilda is lovely, as is Tilda/Mattie, but Tilly makes me heave.

insywinsyspider · 11/12/2008 14:31

changer22 - Mathilda (German) meaning Battle Might (one dim. is Hilda)

ruddynorah · 11/12/2008 14:37

i have a matilda. she's 2. her little friends call her tilda, i guess it's easier.

BabyBaby123 · 11/12/2008 14:47

i don't like it personally - there are lots around at the moment. But Tilly is okay as a shortening

SnowOfHands · 11/12/2008 16:29

changer, Mathilda, as pointed out, is the Germanic spelling. Mighty in battle, or in my Mathilda's case, built like a tank!
