What do you all think of Elouise for a girl?

[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloise_(1955_book) this Eloise book is fabulous!

thumbElf · 08/12/2008 22:56

have you combined Eloise and Louise on purpose or by accident?
Prefer Eloise of the two.

Moondancer · 08/12/2008 22:58

To me Elouise just screams 'lousie' but Eloise dosent .

Sorry but spelling your name is a pain, especially when there is a more common way of spelling it. There is nothing worse than seeing your name spelt wrong...or having to spell it out to people.

You also find it hard to get off the shelf personalised mugs etc...

muggglewump · 08/12/2008 23:04

Lovely name but I do think the spelling Elouise is daft.
Use the correct spelling, people that haven't come across it will soon get used to it.

I didn't change the spelling of my DD's name to help others less familiar with it and strangely my Doctor made a comment just this week about how friends of his had changed the spelling and he thought it was silly.
The Doctor is Irish and DDs name is Niamh!

hippipotami · 09/12/2008 08:47

Where do you live that people have never come across the name Eloise before?

I think your dd is going to drop the surplus letter in Elouise as soon as she gets to secondary school because she is going to hate the fact everyone spells her name wrong.

Either that or you are condemning her to a life time of 'my name is Elouise, with a u'.
And most people will be like

People may also assume that poor Eloise's mum and dad don't know how to spell.

Either way, to me mis-spelling it i setting her up to be judged (read her the chavvy comments already) and a lifetime of correcting people on the spellign of her name. From someone who has had to spell her name out to people, trust me it gets old quickly and I wish I was called Jane!

hippipotami · 09/12/2008 08:48

Argh, is and here in the last sentence.

NowICanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 09/12/2008 09:23

eloise is inside the top 100 names now. But it's hardly ubiquitous.

BouncingTinsel · 09/12/2008 10:21

My niece (2yo) is called Eloise. I like it. No-one seems to have any trouble pronouncing it. It does occasionally get shortened to Ellie.

Elouise just looks odd, though it is a variant, I don't think it is a widely used one. I think people may get a bit confused by it. And I speak as someone who has a fairly ordinary name that is always mis-spelt!

IllegallyBrunette · 09/12/2008 10:28

I have never met anyone who didn't know how to spell Eloise. Infact more people spell dd2's first name wrong (chloe), than her middle name.

pregapuss · 09/12/2008 12:24

Yes it was a combination of Eloise and Louise on purpose. Louise is a family name sort of thing and we have one in each generation so wanted Louise somewhere and I can't have Louise as a middle name and Eloise as the first!

To be honest, I am starting to regret starting this thread. I wanted an opinion of the name not a big arguement about the way it is spelt!

And I have never met anybody who can't spell chloe

OP posts:
CoteDAzur · 09/12/2008 13:39

"when I asked how they thought you would spell it they said Elouise"

How do you pronounce Eloise, then?

Because, if you pronounce it correctly ("Elo-weese") I can't believe anyone would want to spell it Elouise.

CoteDAzur · 09/12/2008 13:41

'It is a bit like saying "Most people spell book with a double o, but I'm going to spell it bouk because I like it better"!'

Worse. It's like saying 'Everyone spells book with a double o, but I'm going to spell it bouk because people around me don't know how to spell it'

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 13:43

Elouise makes me want to pronounce it Eee-loiuse for some reason

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 13:48

"I agree with stupid things like Kloe and Jorja, but that is changing the first letter and I don't personally see that as the same thing at all"

It's no different at all. It's changing the traditional spelling of a name to suit yourself, pure and simple.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 13:48

If you like it, fine, but you did ask for opinions.

seeker · 09/12/2008 13:54

And do remember that opinions on here are pretty representative of people you'll meet in real life. If the vast majority of people here thing that spelling it your way is going to be a pain in the neck for your dd for years, then they are probably right and I think you'd be unwise not to to at least consider what's being said.

ketal · 09/12/2008 13:56

Not having a go but...

You said...

"I wanted an opinion of the name not a big arguement about the way it is spelt!"

You asked for opnions on the name. Of the 65 threads 33 say that Eloise (Spelt without the u) is a lovely name, but with the u it is not as nice.

Two people said they liked it with the u.

The other comments varied from mentioning the book, the song and various other comments about the subject.

Given that you asked for people's opinions - that is what you've got - Eloise is lovely, Elouise is not. Fair enough if you don't agree with what the other 33 posters have written, that's your perogative - your child to name as you please, but if you ask for opinions - then you have to accept them whether you like them or not.

There's no argument here, honest, just people giving their opinions, and for once mostly in agreement with each other. Unfortunately, just not in agreement with you! But at the end of the day, whether you agree with the majority, or go your own way - it is your child and good luck to you. I hope you have a happy birth and baby, and whichever spelling you choose, the name in essence is lovely!

CountessDracula · 09/12/2008 14:04

Elouise looks like E Louise to me
like J Edgar Hoover type thing

Eloise is very nice but being used a lot atm I think, there seem to be a lot of them about

I second what ketal says. By asking you have invited comment on the spelling. It is integral.

I have children with much trickier names than Eliose and they have no problem at all with friends and family who were unfamiliar with it to start off with. I would far rather have used the correct name rather than some odd bastardised version. This thread should show you that more people than not will know how to spell Eloise correctly.

If Louise is a family name - use it then, rather than tacking on an extra "e" to make a strange new name.

morningpaper · 09/12/2008 14:14

Lovely name but your children will tell everyone that you went to the Registry Office and didn't know how to spell it correctly (even if this is untrue - I have heard it a lot from people with 'unusual' names )

Don't go down in family myth as an illiterate peasant!

IllegallyBrunette · 09/12/2008 14:15

Alot of people spelt Chloe, 'Cloe' when she she was born and we had cards for her, but no one spelt Eloise wrongly, thats all I was saying.

At the end of the day, you are spelling the name wrongly, spelling it with a U, but thats your choice and if you are happy with it then don't ask for opinions about it on here, because you won't always get the answer you want.

cheeseandsproutssarnie · 09/12/2008 14:17
