What do you all think of Elouise for a girl?

Eloise is a lovely name. I wanted it for dd1 but dp wouldn't agree. Please don't spoil it by spelling it differently; it just looks silly.

CoteDAzur · 08/12/2008 20:08

"We spelt it Elouise because when we wrote out a list of possible names, nobody seemed to even know how to prounce Eloise"

That might be because Eloise is a French name and you are not French, and neither are your friends, family members, or neighbors.

Rather than bastardise a perfectly good name, why didn't you just choose a name your friends/family could pronounce?

hippipotami · 08/12/2008 20:13

Agree with cote. But also have to say that one of my friends called her dd Eloise, and absolutely everyone knew how to pronounce it. I have never seen it as a 'difficult' name.

Elouise is not nice imo. Because it looks like it should be pronounced EeLuese.

Eloise is however beautiful

aidansyummymummy · 08/12/2008 20:14

As someone who is constantly having to spell my name I tried to ensure my name choice for my child was something that they wouldnt need to spell. Howver I still get it spelt wrong...arrggghh

Have to agree I much prefer Eloise.

janeite · 08/12/2008 20:15

No need to be French to use it though: just to like The Damned!

ben5 · 08/12/2008 20:15

love it but there seem to be alot of them around at the moment

meglet · 08/12/2008 20:16

it's a pretty name.

pregapuss · 08/12/2008 20:54

Bit harsh no? To say to somebody who has already chosen that and has to stick with it for life?

Well I like it. But then I don't like the 'ordinary' names and think a little individuality is a v important thing.

So there

Umlellala · 08/12/2008 21:12

Well,I read the thread title and thought'ooh, that looks odd, should be Eloise' (lovely name!)but after seeing it written all over the thread, I am used to it already and already it looks like a new name and pretty

Ponders · 08/12/2008 21:14

You weren't listening to Pick of the Pops yesterday, were you, Pp?

(Barry Ryan's Eloise was played )

pregapuss · 08/12/2008 21:39

Thank you to those of you who have agreed with me about the spelling.

TBH I don't think it is THAT important how you spell a name. We prefer Elouise and so do all our family and friends. I started this thread to see if people like the name, not to get moaned at so much for adding one letter in . Even after reading this thread, I still prefer ELouise to Eloise

Zazette · 08/12/2008 21:49

Actually, in my experience how you spell a name IS important. I have a very very unusual surname, that I always have to spell. My parents thought they were being helpful by giving me a well-known first name - but it happens to be one that has lots of possible spellings... I am resigned to it now, but when I was a kid I really hated having to spell out my name all the time. Do please think about this.

CoteDAzur · 08/12/2008 21:55

Of course the spelling of a name is important. Quite often, it is the difference between classic and chavtastic.

pregapuss · 08/12/2008 22:11

But to be honest, most people I know guessed it was Elouise rather than Eloise. There are no other Eloise's round here so I think she would have to spell it no matter how we did it.

OP posts:
RachieB · 08/12/2008 22:15

of course its important

totally agree on the classic / chavtastic comment !

i don't like it when people mess with a lovely name....

have had @ pre school a Kloe and Jorja ?! eugh why change lovely names to ugly chavvy ones ?!

and before anyone says "because its their child, and they wanted to " yeah i guess that

RachieB · 08/12/2008 22:16

maybe your friends and family are just being polite.... seeing as you have chosen that spelling of it already ....

pregapuss · 08/12/2008 22:23

No, we hadn't already chosen it though. We started off with Eloise but nobody knew how to say it properly and when I asked how they thought you would spell it they said Elouise.

I agree with stupid things like Kloe and Jorja, but that is changing the first letter and I don't personally see that as the same thing at all

nooka · 08/12/2008 22:38

I think in the days of e-mail having what is essentially a misspelt name is really unhelpful. Your family and friends will soon learn how to spell Eloise properly, and anyone she comes across later in life will spell it correctly too, because it will be as they expect if they have ever come across another Eloise. Otherwise she will have to spell it, and have in incorrectly spelt on a frequent basis. Which is annoying.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/12/2008 22:41

I like Eloise though it reminds me of Abelard and Eloise which was a sad tale.

seeker · 08/12/2008 22:50

It is a bit like saying "Most people spell book with a double o, but I'm going to spell it bouk because I like it better"!

And, actually, the name is pronounced something like Eloweese, not Eloueese.....so Elouise doesn't help with the pronounciation.

LynetteScavo · 08/12/2008 22:54

I love the name Eloise - but I went to school with a girl called Eloise and she tried to be posh and call herself Elwaahs! - So there is a case for the U.

ketal · 08/12/2008 22:55

"We started off with Eloise but nobody knew how to say it properly and when I asked how they thought you would spell it they said Elouise"

But as the name is becoming increasingly popular, people will increasingly know how to spell it - the traditional way, and then by your argument, people will not know how to use your DD's version of the name because it is the non-traditional variant, and so she will end up with the name that people don't know how to spell. It would be far easier just to teach your friends and family the correct version!

Incidentally, the first time I taught an Eloise, I knew how to spell it - even though I had never come across the name before. The clue is there in the pronunciation .

PlonkerTeatowelOnTheirHeads · 08/12/2008 22:55

Agree with the many others who say they prefer Eloise. It is a beautiful name and looks so much nicer spelt properly.
