what do you think of the name Valerie?

My friend is considering naming her child this, after her mother. She knows it is quite dated however, and wanted to know your thoughts? Personally, I like it a lot.

I think it's a lovely name, but please. if she has ginger hair don't call her Valerie..!

In my family tree I have found a Valeria, which is a little bit different and could be shortened to "Ria" rather than "Val"

Valerie was our name for dd before she was born because we knew she would be a singleton.

It's fine as a name but Lally as a nickname is vile. Is it only in my family that it's a euphemism for diarrhoea?

My Mum is called Valerie- she hates it, we all hate it. Real 1950's name.

I think it fits right in with that register. All those "ie"s. But clearly she might take some stick for it. It is nice to be named for family though - my dd is named after two grandmothers (great-grandmothers to her) and she is proud of that connection. Is the mother still alive? I'd not use the name of a live relative for a first name personally.

I think it is OK for a girl. My husband likes Valeri for a boy (it is firmly vetoed obviously!)

Love Valentina and Valletta...if thats a real name....? not keen on valerie tho.

Valetta is a town in Malta isn't it? I suppose being named after a town never did Miss Hilton any harm....

I think it's quite blinkered to dislike it JUST because it was typical in the fifties.

It's not an exceptionally ugly sound, it isn't so different from Emily.

Once upon a time Emilys were all great aunts and step mothers.

I mean, dislike it if you want to ! but if you knew even ONE little girl called Valerie, I bet it would start to grow on you, or you'd dislike it less.
