do a secret scan

Cies · 12/11/2008 19:13

I thought you were saying that your surname was Deal. I was going to say that neither of them went very well IMO.

Agree - do a secret scan, analyse your cravings and get your aunts and grannies over to swing a ring over your bump and tell you what sex it is, and [then] commit if you want.

hmm I am not overly keen on Terry, but I reckon it could be one of those names you warm to.
prefer Terence, so maybe would just call him that and let dh use terry

LuLuBai · 12/11/2008 19:19

I feel for you swottybetty. I am in a similar situation - Esme is on my girls list too (as a middle name at the mo). DH not convinced at all. For boys he is extremely keen on Albert or Cecil. Albert I can handle, but I am struggling to get my head around Cecil.

How long do you have until baby is due? You could just keep quiet about names for a while and see if he changes his mind or just forgets (my DH came up with some absolute horrors last time I was pg but forgot about them again by the time I gave birth)

2point4kids · 12/11/2008 19:23

Could you agree and then when baby is born if its a boy, come over all 'But he doesnt LOOK like a Terry sob sob' and hope he gives in

hambo · 12/11/2008 19:25

Esme is really nice

Terry is not so good...but if it was a boy, he would be so cute that maybe he would make the name cute too!!

RaspberryBlower · 12/11/2008 19:26

Cecil? Is he having you on? Not too sure about Terry either. Esme is lovely. Agree that people often think of 'interesting' names early in the pregnancy but change their minds when it comes down to it.

Drusilla · 12/11/2008 19:27

Esme makes me think of Granny Weatherwax. Sorry!

swottybetty · 12/11/2008 19:28

[appalled] at secret scan . i would be busted by the hoardes of baby clothes bought.

my surname nearly is "deal" - just one letter wrong.

lulu i think you are right. my feeling is keep shtoom, wait til i am holding every card in the deck (i'm thinking the five min straight after childbirth) and then "oh, but she's such an emse." unless she's a boy of course. in which case its "thank god i poo poo'ed that terry deal"

Terry is awful but Esme is lovely - so let's hope it's a girl...

LuLuBai · 12/11/2008 19:39

Yes - I reckon 5 minutes either side of the actual birth he will probably agree to anything!

Men are actually rather forgetful about names. I let DH choose DDs middle name and he regularly forgets what it even is now!

kitsmummy · 12/11/2008 19:55

Terry is blatantly awful. Get a better boys name before you commit to that deal!

RubySlippers · 12/11/2008 19:57

terry is not great IMO

Esme rocks

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/11/2008 20:40

I hope you get your girl.
Otherwise my advice would be to deny all knowledge of any so-called 'deal'!!!!!

Horton · 12/11/2008 21:12

Terry is an awful name. Awful. Don't do it.

preggersplayspop · 12/11/2008 21:18

I think you should bin both of them and find a name you both agree with. One of you will go through life feeling hard done by otherwise.

pania · 12/11/2008 21:28

Terry is awful IMO. Why does your dh so keen on it?

janeite · 12/11/2008 21:29

Esme is gorgeous. Cecil is not gorgeous! Isn't it strange that Cecily for a girl is beautiful but remove one letter and it suddenly becomes horrible?! Terry was my dad's name, so I can't insult it - but it's not a name I would choose; I think it sounds very much "of its time" iykwim.

pania · 12/11/2008 21:33

Why IS your husband so keen on it, I mean

BabyBaby123 · 12/11/2008 21:43

sorry Terry is awful. Your dh sounds like he's being pretty immature tbh! have you got another girl's name you both sort of like so that you don't have to 'trade' because Terry is truly terrible imo....

BabyBaby123 · 12/11/2008 21:44

especially if your surname is what I think it is - he will sound like an Eastenders character aged about 60!!

elsiepiddock · 12/11/2008 21:46

Esme gorgeous - but very popular.

Terry - horrendous!!

swottybetty · 12/11/2008 21:46

oh dear. i thought to enlighten dh and told him how much everyone loved my name and hated his. instead i have entrenched his feelings further - anyone would think he had a problem with MN and the good ladies who spend their time him.

cecily is pretty isnt it? is one of the girls in atonement cecily? always that fear of a lisp tho'....

pania, dh has no irony in him so i can only guess that his committment to terry is born of a genuine desire to have a little geezer. who would be v handy in the house. actually i really dont hate it as much as i should. but couldnt stomach terence and have a strict rule about having full and proper names on birth certificates

swottybetty · 12/11/2008 21:49

baby, i am curious to know what you think my surname is . the one other girls name we both love is Patience, but that REALLY doesnt work with surname.

oh no! is esme popular??
