Don't they like????

My nephew was born on Saturday and he is called Brayden.

Almost everyone I have told has gone "oh, thats unusual"

Are they trying to subtly say they don't like it??

I thinks he really suits it and it nice to not have a common name!

Thoughts please?!?!

They may like it or not, but does it really matter? if everyone liked the same names it'd be a boring world, main thing is the parents like it. I've never heard it before so my first response too would be that's unusual and not in a bad way!

I often get the same response to my dd's name (but most people then normally add how pretty it is or ask where it's from) I've only thought once that someone actually said it in a tone that meant they didn't like it, actually she pulled a face and then went 'oh' when i repeated her name (was a checkout lady in the co-op she was astoundingly rude! and obviously had no taste). I think that's just the phrase people tend to use when they hear a name they've never heard before tbh

Nancy66 · 10/11/2008 19:16

I have to admit I say 'oh that's unusual' when I mean 'that's bloody horrible.'

Hulababy · 10/11/2008 19:29

I have used similar comments when I am not keen on a name.

But hey, it doesnt matter what people think so long as the parents like it.

differentID · 10/11/2008 19:32

I use similar comments when I am not particularly keen or caught off guard- if it's the latter, I usually follow quickly with "but it's nice".If the former I follow it with "really unusual".

PuzzleRocks · 10/11/2008 19:36

I'm afraid it probably does mean they don't like the name. I didn't particularly like a young relatives name but over time I realised it actually rather suited him so stuff what other people think.

Scifinerd · 10/11/2008 19:36

I have had similar comments re my ds's name but I don't care as long as they are not outright rude and say "ugh what a ghastly name". There is no way on earth everyone will like your name of choice. And that is why I only tell people after the birth so they have to be polite and pretend they like it whether they do or not.

thisisyesterday · 10/11/2008 19:37

they might be. or they might genuinely be thinking it's unusual.
I tend not to comment on babies' names if I don't like them. If I feel I have to say something I just say "that's nice"

flowerybeanbag · 10/11/2008 19:37

I think you are right they probably don't like it, but does it matter?

Liffey · 10/11/2008 20:47

I'd say "oh that sounds very American".

Names that rhyme with Aidan sound american to my ear. I don't mean that as a criticism, it's just that their popularity exploded there.

FlirtyThirty · 11/11/2008 14:55

I'm afraid I don't like the name and would have said something along the unusual/American line to conceal this...however, it's not my child, so it shouldn't matter much what I think...

mabanana · 11/11/2008 15:00

Yup, I'm afraid that's what they mean.

RachieB · 11/11/2008 21:27

louisejohnson87 · 13/11/2008 22:12

Hey RachieB,

My nephew was born Saturday 8th November.
When was your friends born?
You never know we may be on about the same one!

I love the name, it really suits him, it's just the reaction from other people!?!?

My kids have rather different names, but none of them made up and it does sound made-up iyswim.

I'd have said something like "how are you spelling it?" (for future cards etc)

I wouldn't have given my opinion on it, once the child is named it there's no point in saying anything nasty/negative.

RachieB · 14/11/2008 15:09

ah, the Brayden i know was born a bit before then

ignore peoples reactions,as seen on here babies names taste is a VERY personal thing! haha

xx
