What do people think of Nina?
What kind of person does it make you think of?

Wow, I think I have found a name that nobody hates .

I love Nina Simone and her CDs remind me of happy childhood days listening to music with my Mum. Also if DH and I have "a song" then its Mr Bojangles sung my NS (I know, not terrible romantic!). So the NS connotations are very welcome.

I also like the fact that it is a name used in many cultures with varied meanings. For example, in Spanish it means "liitle girl". In one of the native American languages it means "fire". Nina was also a Babylonian and Assyrian fertility goddess.

I am not at all worried about the Nina and the Neurons stuff. I mean what % of the world knows about that programme? Also she is a good female role model (in a cheesy, predictable way).

I don't know the character of Nina from The Seagull. I guess I better read it. This pregnancy is helping my literacy no end - another name of our shortlist is Hester and I have just ploughed through the whole of the Scarlett Letter to make sure that I do not mind associations with Hester Prynne!

"Neena-neena" jokes might get a bit irksome but kids will find a way to take the piss of almost any name.

Oh it's virtually impossible to think of a name that cannot be made into a playground taunt. And if the little brats want to tease a particular child they will find something, even if it isn't the child's name.

Nina is a good character in The Seagull but she loses it a bit and starts to believe she actually is a Seagull. Nothing to worry yourself about too much.

Yes, Santa and Maria are both names too.

Besides, the fleet of ships that discovered a new continent!!! That's a good thing. The name is not Myra or Maxine.

I love the name Nina - had a good friend called Nina at primary school and there were suprisingly few Nee-nah moments in the playground.

It's my mother in law's name. I you know her, you'll understand.

it's a beautiful name. it's actually my DD's middle name - named after a very special friend of ours. i think it's classic and grown up but also suitable for a small girl. it's pretty unusual but still an acceptable 'classic' name, if you see what i mean. go for it!

When I was going through my 6 weeks of hell trying to name DD2 and then again with DD3, everyone kept suggesting Nina as a name. I would therefore deduce from that that an awful lot of people on MN LURVE the name

sophisticated and slightly bohemian - a good choice I think

Like it, DS may have been Nina if he'd been a girl, as our first dance when we got married was to Nina Simone's "My Baby Just Cares For Me".
