Shireen?

Am addicted to 'The Riches' and love the name 'Shireen' from it. But could one call a baby this? And does it sound a bit, ahem, [dare I say it] chav? Or is it elegant and unusual?
Please advise oh wise Mumsnetters!

Chav. Sorry.

yummymummy1405 · 17/10/2008 20:35

I know a lovely shireen pushing 60 and just the wrong side of the normal/chav divide. Make of that what you will. Having said that Sherry I think is pretty.

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:37

I've only ever heard it used as an Asian name and I wouldn't have considered it chav, but what do I know

LaDiDaDi · 17/10/2008 20:38

It's not elegant imo.

2Helenback · 17/10/2008 20:38

Sorry, sounds like a guest on Jeremy Kyle chose it.

If you love it, do it! You'd probably hate my choices.

pointygravedogger · 17/10/2008 20:38

SHireen Nanjiani - Scottish newsreader and Glasgow slang for fanny

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/10/2008 20:40

Well, my other choices are Annabel and Claudia!
Not sure why I like it so much, probably because of the fabulous Minnie Driver who plays the character of Shireen. Might be ok if I lived in the States?

pointy - actually that's a point. My SIL does call her fannoir her 'Shireen'. Had forgotten about that. Oops. That would cause much hysteria!

Being Scottish - to me Shireen is Asian (and lovely).

yummymummy1405 · 17/10/2008 20:47

Am in love with claudia such a pretty name. Was always a fan of claudia rose personally.

hifi · 18/10/2008 17:14

its a gypsy name.

MrsMattie · 18/10/2008 17:17

Shireen isn't offensive - it's pretty, even...but it sounds to my ears a bit 'Shareen/Cheryl/Charlene/Chantelle...a bit 'girls of the Playboy Mansion', iyswim.

Andthentherewerethree · 18/10/2008 17:17

there was a girl at school called shireen and she was def chav (or whatever it was called back then)
this was late 80's early 90's and she had farrah fawcett flicks and was a big girl, very loud swore like a trooper and was not elegant in anyway so for me its a complete no no.

Liffey · 18/10/2008 17:21

eeeooooo!. Bogan name. That'll be a $200 fine.

She sounds like one of cath n kim's neighbours.

Liffey · 18/10/2008 17:24

Annabel and Claudia are both beautifully modest, feminine in a strong way, pretty but not frilly, unusual but not odd, upmarket but not pretentious...

Stick with this type of name! You are overthinking things now!

Liffey · 18/10/2008 17:27

Do you like Juliet? That seems in the same style as Annabel and Claudia.

Nancy66 · 18/10/2008 18:00

ugly name. and, yes, a bit chav

meandmyjoe · 18/10/2008 18:41

Annabel is a beautiful name. How about Abigail or is that too common nowdays?

2Helenback · 18/10/2008 20:09

Annabel was nearly dd1's name, and would have loved Claudia also, but dh has vetoed.

frazzledoldbag34 · 18/10/2008 21:28

Think I'll stick with Annabel.
Will put Shireen into my mental list of names I'd have liked to use but never actually would. Maybe when I'm an old lady I'll get a siamese cat and call it Shireen!

Or perhaps I can pursuade DD1 to call the hamster she's getting for Christmas Shireen............instead of Rox which is her current fave name.

Heated · 18/10/2008 21:43

Definitely a hamster name!

In fact, that's going to be my stock answer for all dubious, hormonally MAD babynames

nickeldime · 19/10/2008 16:25

Looks like it's used much in Iranian from the page below. How about Shyrin?

RachieB · 19/10/2008 16:48

it sounds chavvy and/or made up!

Claudie is cute

OrmIrian · 19/10/2008 16:49

No.
