Just wondering what general feelings are on Jonah? And esp if anyone has used the name. We are pretty short on other options...

LOVE it.

I had a canary called Jonah and would have pushed for it if dd had been a boy

hunkermunker · 13/10/2008 21:38

I like it.

Why are you short on other options though? There are LOTS of names

Unless you eat plankton. In which case, call him John.

GruffaloSoldier · 13/10/2008 21:38

I love this name! I have it as a second choice! It was my first choice until I realised it was quite similar to my nephews name. But I would def use it!

midnightexpress · 13/10/2008 21:41

I really like it, but I believe it has associations with bad luck (something to do with fishermen) so not a good one if you're of a suerstitious bent.

Shitemum · 13/10/2008 21:42

Be prepared for a tidal wave of fluffy stuffed whale toys!

midnightexpress · 13/10/2008 21:43

superstitious

nooka · 13/10/2008 21:44

It does have negative connotations. I wouldn't use it myself. Not terrible though, but I don't understand your lack of options as there have to be thousands, if not tens of thousands of names to chose from.

and the Whale sprung to mind.
Sorry, that's really awful isn't it?
Prefer Joe TBH.

singersgirl · 13/10/2008 21:46

I like it, but overwhelmingly associate it with a bringer of bad luck or miserable person. Which is a shame.

Aero · 13/10/2008 21:48

Love it - always have, despite connotations.

totalmisfit · 13/10/2008 21:49

i love it love it love it.

but dp will always veto it. plus we live by the sea, so the locals might be wary.

Wilkiepedia · 13/10/2008 21:50

Love it

Heated · 13/10/2008 21:53

Yes, am mum to one. Have never come across the superstitious reference before, except two days after naming him in the very book I was reading on the labour ward - avoid Ellis Peters.

However, personally I consider Jonah bloody lucky to survive being eaten by a whale. Given the absence of any oh so amusing whale presents from friends and relatives, I did buy ds a whale top last year lol. You'll have to ask any Noah's if they get arks.

Most ppl think of Lomu, my father mentioned Barrington and my dh's class were initially puzzled by it, until one said "Duh, haven't you lot heard of Jonah Arc"

Similarish too if you don't want to use Jonah, is Jonas.

ja9 · 13/10/2008 21:56

love it!

i met a baby jonah yest morn in a church in london. thought it was a very cool name!

Jonah is fab - just think of Jonah Lomu (?sp) (NZ rugby player).

Love the fact that the BBC sent Jonah Fisher to cover the Greenpeace activities in the southern oceans re Japanese whaling.

Go for it.

TheSmallClanger · 14/10/2008 11:33

It's a nice name, and it shortens to Joe or Jonny if he prefers that later.

lucykate · 14/10/2008 11:36

i love the name jonah, the little boy in 'sleepless in seattle' is called jonah.

Troutpout · 14/10/2008 11:41

love it

LenniEd · 14/10/2008 20:55

Sorry for going AWOL, internet gave up immediately after I posted. Thanks for all your responses - generally positive , few whale issues but nothing I can't handle think we might have found a name

Those wondering why we're stuck for options - enormous family + very very awkward surname + fussy DH

Not a good combination.

Sleepcat - I love Isaac, DH doesn't if it was just my choice Isaac would be first option, and Jonah second.

i do like it but...

it does have bad luck linked to it? a friend was all set to name her little boy jonah until this was pointed out to her... she chose jake in the end.

emskaboo · 15/10/2008 11:04

My son is called Jonah, we love it. We had some very negative comments-from my MIL We live by the sea but he was born in his waters so he is ok.

earlynite · 04/11/2008 22:34

My son is called Jonah too! It is a wonderful name. Meaning Peace/Dove in Hebrew. I feel it is unsual but not weird. Go with it!

earlynite · 04/11/2008 22:36

PS. My favorite film is "sleepless in seattle"
