Seraphina?

Am a bit scared to post in here, have seen the bunfights which ensue! This is a bit premature as we're not planning to ttc for another 10 months. But DP and I were just discussing what names we like. We both like Thomas for a boy so that's sorted. I said I liked Seren for a girl but he's not that keen. But he's said he likes Seraphina. I'm not sure whether it's too unusual. Any opinions?

It is very unusual but I like it. What would you shorten it to?

I knew a girl called Serra and this is a pretty alternative although she probably got called Sarah all the time as it sounds so similar.

severmefingers · 12/10/2008 06:46

hi. its nice, although it could sound rather pretentious. But thats just my personal opinion.Feel free to ignore it

DeJaVous · 12/10/2008 07:09

I like it

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/10/2008 07:09

personally I would think it was a tiny bit pretentious too....sorry.

CoteDAzur · 12/10/2008 07:26

I think I would prefer Seraphine. Have you looked up the meaning? It is a musical instruments and means "fire in Israel", apparently.

Possible abbreviation: Serap, means "mirage" in Turkish Serra and Seren are also Turkish names, by the way.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 07:43

I thought it sounded quite pretentious too so it's ok I looked up famous people called Seren and found a Turkish singer and actor. Didn't know it was Turkish before that! Our DD is called Zora so unusual names aren't totally ruled out but I don't want something that they will be laughed at at school for. Will ask DP what he thinks of Seraphine

DP like Phina as a shortening btw

Any other opinions?

Imo Seren is much better with Zora.

Anna8888 · 12/10/2008 10:31

My DSS1's maths teacher is called Séraphin and he is a huge black man with a character to match so I mentally associate the name with Africans. But I don't know whether I have any justification for that

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 11:39

I agree Heated. Another vote for me Didn't know it could be a man's name as well.

Seraphin is pronounced "Seraph-un" so not really the same name as Seraphine pronounced as "Seraph-een".

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 17:57

It's growing on me I think. DP is laughing at me. I do think it sounds a bit poncy though. again! We both think we prefer Seraphine

I have an Italian friend with the name, spelled Serafina.

Clure · 12/10/2008 18:14

Not keen on seraphina, agree sounds poncy. Seren is the welsh word for "star"

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2008 18:32

I like Seren and Serena but Seraphina is a bit too much for me.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 18:44

Hmmmm, am stuck now. It's literally the only name he likes. He doesn't mind Seren but I want the name to be something we both like iyswim. Back to the drawing board!

lol yeah it was the cat . My dd had that DVD It was in The princess and the pauper and barbie played Annelise thats a nice name

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 19:35

Cat? Barbie? not so good. I like Serena but ideally I want a name that doesn't end with an A (I know i know, Seraphina ends with an A, but I only started the thread so everyone would say it was awful and I could show it to DP, I didn't expect it to grow on me! ) Doesn't necessarily need to be similar to Seraphina, but I do like names to be moderately unusual i.e. don't know anyone called it but wouldn't get laughed at at school. Not picky am I!
