Seraphina?

Am a bit scared to post in here, have seen the bunfights which ensue! This is a bit premature as we're not planning to ttc for another 10 months. But DP and I were just discussing what names we like. We both like Thomas for a boy so that's sorted. I said I liked Seren for a girl but he's not that keen. But he's said he likes Seraphina. I'm not sure whether it's too unusual. Any opinions?

Seraphina - as in the witch in Philip Pullman's trilogy? Sounds nice to me, but she was a vindictive type of witch, wasn't she?!

ScummyMummy · 12/10/2008 20:47

Serafina Pekala isn't vindictive, BCW!

HeinzEVILSight · 12/10/2008 20:48

I love it!!!! Seraphina's a gorgeous name

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 21:24

Haven't read Pullman's trilogy, but DP has just given me a smile and admitted that's where he got the name from! He read it the other week. He says she's a good witch. Am torn now, like it but stil worried about ponciness. Lucky I've got plenty of time to decide!

Love Sephie as a shortening.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 22:41

That is quite cute Rose

I love Zora. I want this name if my current bump becomes a girl, but DH not keen. Did you name her after Zora Neale Hurston?

I like Seraphina, although it does have a slight 'ponce' element to it

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 13/10/2008 15:27

Thankyou! Zora is my favourite favourite name so nothing else matches up. She's named after a character from a computer game so not quite as sophisticated as Zora Neale Hurston!

I like it.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 13/10/2008 15:32

Wow I totally expected this thread to be 'Noooooooooo, no, no, nooooooooo!' It's definitely grown on me now.

There's a girl in ds's swimming class called this and I think it is lovely. Unusual but not too wacky. I like unusual names though. If I had a girl I would consider it, only possible negative is it is a bit long maybe?

ninedragons · 13/10/2008 15:36

Seraphina would be hard to carry off if you ended up a great big galumphing sort of woman with a booming voice and clothes covered in dog hair and chicken poo from your farm. What sort of genes are you and your DH bringing to the mix?

MatBackFeck · 13/10/2008 15:37

that's true - the one I know is very petite and delicate

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 13/10/2008 15:41

Well I'm short and petite (please ignore the baby weight! ) and DP is average height and skinny. DD is small and v petite. So maybe we have the right genes for the name And of course we tend not to be covered in animal poo It is a bit long, I agree.

spoiler alert but didn't Seraphina the witch kill her ex lover at the end of the trilogy because he spurned her?!

BlueCowWonders · 13/10/2008 22:38

shot him in the back with an arrow, I think

eandz · 13/10/2008 22:40

we were going to name our baby Saraphine if it was a girl. But we had a boy.

Tinker · 13/10/2008 22:42

Have this with the e ending for a middle name for my youngest. Picked because it was my our prententious indulgence name. Had decided it had to be French and this was agreed in the registry office.

monkeymonkeymonkey · 13/10/2008 22:46

I like it. Unusual name, but nice, and one that people would identify as being a real name, not something you just invented, IYSWIM.

eandz · 13/10/2008 22:52

oh, we picked it because it was the name of one of our favorite characters in a phillip pullman novel

ScummyMummy · 13/10/2008 23:34

Seraphine is nice- I can imagine it said in French.

Tinker · 13/10/2008 23:36

You can't get out of it Ms Scummy, I read your earlier post

moondog · 13/10/2008 23:39

I like Seren because I have one myself! It's Welsh for 'star'. Surprised at Turkish thing as I lived there fro 3 years and never heard of a Seren.

Serapfina cool too. I have a great friend called Serafina.

ScummyMummy · 13/10/2008 23:47

Well, I wouldn't use it for a first name I'll admit- as you know I go for boring in that department- but for a middle it is good to be more adventurous. Does your big girl have a romantic middle name too?
