Toby?

I'm due in 9 weeks and we're expecting anothet boy. We've had loads of names and I think we are settled on Toby.

Thats until a friend said Toby made them think of gay men. I really love the name but don't want everyone thinking its a bad name.

So I'd love your feedback.

Thanks

DH's niece called her son Toby, have heard MIL lots of people saying about tobyjugs and "it's a dog's name" but never "it's a gay name"....

What's a gay name anyway? Will he be gay if you call him Toby?

(Am not stalking BTW, am clicking every boy name thread going in my quest!)

FimboGotAxed · 10/10/2008 14:00

It's not for me, but if you like it...

It's not a name you hear a lot in Scotland.

RubySlippers · 10/10/2008 14:02

oh, it is lovely and much under-used IMO

PumpkinPatty · 10/10/2008 14:02

My nephew is Tobias - Toby for short. I think it's lovely.

Stars22 · 10/10/2008 14:02

When i first saw the name Toby i thought Toby Antis (is he gay??i dont no) It doesnt make me think of gay men. If anything it reminds me of a dogs name(very sorry). Saying that i think it is quite a nice name and is not too popular, if you were settled on it and love it go for it, im sure once your baby is born your friend will feel differently about the name.

nailpolish · 10/10/2008 14:02

its slang for penis

FimboGotAxed · 10/10/2008 14:03

NP I was trying very hard not to say that.

kayzisexpecting · 10/10/2008 14:03

I am really strugling this time round. We knew DS would be Freddie before we even found out he was a DS.

We both wanted to call this one Oliver but everyone we told started calling him Ollie which I really hate so we had to scrap that and now I'm really stuck.

donnie · 10/10/2008 14:05

has very gay and also effeminate connotations I'm afraid.

nailpolish · 10/10/2008 14:05

oh fimbo i forgot im not talking to you

what and where is this timesahre i hear youve purchased

kayzisexpecting · 10/10/2008 14:07

I've never heard that before NP.

I was expecting people to say its a dogs name but no one has.

I also associate the name Toby with the word Gay I'm afraid. Not that there's anything wrong with being gay and of course just because your called Toby doesn't mean you are going to be gay

FruitynNutty · 10/10/2008 14:08

you're not your

meglet · 10/10/2008 14:09

I knew a tortoise called Toby once.

If it really is slang for a penis maybe you should avoid the name. I think it's a cute name though.

kayzisexpecting · 10/10/2008 14:09

I wonder what the gay connection is.

I think he'll end up being called Boy for a few weeks after he is born.

See I think its the Scottish thing again.

Toby in England is fine just not Scotland where it is a slang term for a man's thing.

babyinbelly · 10/10/2008 14:23

I have never heard any of the above uses for Toby! I think it is a nice name.

BabyBaby123 · 10/10/2008 14:50

it's ok - not great but ok

izzybiz · 10/10/2008 14:52

My 15 year old Ds is called Toby, I have never met a dog called Toby, a gay man, or ever heard it used as slang for penis

If you like it use it!

PumpkinPatty · 10/10/2008 15:01

I've never heard Toby as slang for penis either - must just be a scottish thing.

Don't understand why it has gay connotations either...

Liffey · 10/10/2008 15:06

I really like that name.

Liffey · 10/10/2008 15:07

I've never heard that NP. I've heard John Thomas or something like that!

I don't like Tobias.

I might just put names in a hat and pick one out.
