I like Joseph over Alastair.

Spaceman · 05/10/2008 00:03

My boy is called Alistair. I like it because it grows with the child. Joseph was also on our radar but it's quite popular nowadays (as is every name beginning with J)

pinkyp · 05/10/2008 00:33

what are the top names these days? i know theres alot of jacks about and jacobs

LaVidaLurker · 05/10/2008 00:36

Joseph absolutely lovely - Alastair not so.

annasmami · 05/10/2008 09:19

Alistair is much more classy and elegant. Especially not keen on 'Joe' which to me sounds quite boring/commmon.

Joseph

cyteen · 05/10/2008 13:22

Like them both but would have to go with Joseph, because I have one

WelliesAndPyjamas · 05/10/2008 14:01

Joseph

Bubbaluv · 05/10/2008 14:14

Joseph makes me think of someone with a beard. Lurve Alistair though.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 05/10/2008 17:41

They're both nice names. Joseph, though, is ubiquitous at the moment. Do you have Scottish roots or a Scottish surname? I think names like Alastair and Hamish sound better in their proper environment, if you get my drift.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 05/10/2008 17:42

Alistair

ilovemyflipflops · 05/10/2008 18:11

I prefer Joseph, pinkyp these are the top 100 boys names

dibdabscribble · 05/10/2008 19:12

I like Joseph best. Alistair too poncey for me.

dinkymum · 05/10/2008 23:35

its tough as both nice and both have nice shortenings but i'd probably have to go with Joseph personally

Bubbaluv · 06/10/2008 09:19

MadBad, Alistair is a Greek name according to my baby name books. Alisdair is the scottish variation.

Lizzylou · 06/10/2008 09:21

Alistair, only because I know a fair few Josephs

jellybeans · 06/10/2008 09:26

Joseph by a mile

Chocolateteapot · 06/10/2008 09:38

Joseph

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 06/10/2008 10:18

Well, Alastair may be Greek in origin (something new I've learnt today) but I've never met anyone with the name who wasn't a Scot. So I think custom and practice has made it Scottish.

Anyway, the opinions of a mad old biddy on the internet are immaterial and OP should pick whichever name she likes best.
