What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Lila and Violet were 2 girls names i loved... we had a boy :-)

UnrealisticExpectations · 09/10/2008 20:08

Oh, go easy on me! My son's Noah. It was the only name we seriously considered. I love the sound of it, the shape of it written down and the fact that (and most people do seem to agree with this) it's a name that could convincingly take him anywhere. You could be Noah the beach bum or Noah the high court judge! Almost everyone says they love the name and loads of people say it was in their final two names. I can see the drawbacks but I'm really glad we went for it. It's in the teens in the top boys' names in America and they're predicting it to be in the top 10 for the first time in 2008. (That's what I reassured myself with when we bit the bullet!) Think it's only in the 30s or 40s in the UK. But they are making name cups in Woollies with it on these days, so it's obviously on the up!

My other name would have been Gabriel, which I love, and I would have definitely called a 2nd that if we lived in Ireland - but not here yet!

I LOVE Jonah, if we ever had another, boy but dh says no way. Gotta say, it probably would be asking for trouble, especially if he inherited daddy's luck.

I know a Levi and that works really well. I know a Seth too but I just can't get away with it. Silas is great but, as has been mentioned, it's a bit too much like silage!

I wanted to call my little girl Betty, which I think is the cutest thing! But people said it would have been cruel.

barnsleybelle · 09/10/2008 20:25

Unreal.... I love Noah, had 2nd dc been a boy then i wanted it.

There is a betty in ds's class and she's a real cutie and carries the name well.

missismac · 09/10/2008 20:27

Obadiah, Angel, Petroc, Thor (DH's choice!), Christy, Gawain - all for boys. I particularly liked Angel but just couldn't do it.

Elvi, Elfine, Marietta, Dixie & Blythe.

We ended up with quite nice and unusual names but we're not alone. Round here everyone has unusual (or very traditional) names.

Missismac.

barnsleybelle · 09/10/2008 20:27

I also love the name Quincy for a boy... shortened to Quin, but dh threatened legal action!!!!!!!!!!

sussexoldspot · 09/10/2008 20:34

Ooh missismac, I love Thor! unrealistic, we decided that if we ever managed another boy, he would be called Seth, much to my northern Mum's digust!

ditheringdora · 09/10/2008 20:36

I love Blaise and Octavia. Don't use them anyone,am very possessive in a dog in the manger way!

Louplet · 09/10/2008 20:51

Willow and Rowan (too cruel with our surname)
Lucifer (clearly not a goer but we really liked the name)
Angel (DH vetoed as being too "Buffy")
Phoenix (ruined for me by Mel B using it)

We do have a Gabriel though

Ab31 · 09/10/2008 20:51

Mogli.

Ab31 · 09/10/2008 20:52

As in The Jungle Book!

NotAnOtter · 09/10/2008 20:53

my childs name is on this thread

we call him Mogli for the pet name!

Pammi · 09/10/2008 20:55

Pearl - DH said only if she was born aged 81

Rex - a dog's name, apparently.

rubytwokids · 09/10/2008 21:02

Boiledeggandtoatsoldiers, that is my mum's name! (Myfanwy - my mum isn't called Boiled Egg and...etc.)

OK, my secret names I'd have chosen instead of the perfectly good names dd and ds have, with which I am very happy:

Gabriel, Eifion, Isaac, Josiah, Mabel, Elsie, Betsy, Eilidh.

LynetteScavo · 09/10/2008 21:03

Elsie

beansontoast · 09/10/2008 21:06

leroy
rex
solomon
rufus
bruno
nesta

wasnt allowed to have any of them...and any way it was a girl in the end!

jibbajabba · 09/10/2008 21:21

For those who wanted Indiana and didn't go with it. My Indiana is now 4 and has just started school. She loves her name and so do her friends.

Even my gran eventually said the name is perfect for her.

I worry that Georgia her younger sister will be unhappy that I didn't have the courage to go with Clementine or Genevive for her.

LesAnimaux · 09/10/2008 21:27

Ooh jibbajabba - you have a theme going on there! You can call your next DD Virginia.

jibbajabba · 09/10/2008 21:32

That is definately better than what my partner wanted: Dakota!

Granny22 · 09/10/2008 21:43

Lucien
Lucius
Agnes
Tearlach (Gaelic form of Charles,I would have had this but DP veoted it)
Heidi

... all lovely, couldn't use any of them..

crankytwanky · 09/10/2008 21:52

I really wanted Djibril for a boy. (Arabic for Gabriel, and ds born around Christmas time), but too associated with alleged wife-beating footballer Djibril Cisse.
Also liked Caspar (friendly ghost), Denzil (Cornish but associated with actor D.Washington), and Django.
Wanted Xanthe for a girl.

Bubbaloo · 09/10/2008 21:57

Felix,Barnaby and Tabitha.

crankytwanky · 09/10/2008 22:11

Ooh I like Felix and Tabitha too, but they are "cat names" apparently.
We both liked Raoul too, but somehow seemed odd as we're not Spanish, and in fact our Worst Holiday Ever was in Spain.

Gingerbear · 09/10/2008 22:23

My DD has friends called Conrad and Elsie - brother and sister, and too lovely for words. Kids grow into their names.

BibiThree · 09/10/2008 22:27

Atticus for a boy, Aiko for a girl

tenren · 09/10/2008 22:42

I really wanted Isadora for DD.

Instead we went with Sunday, which I love - and then some daft sleb goes and names their DD Sunday.

annoying.
