What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

What a fabulous thread. I loved Genevieve too, so pretty and Noah. I know a Kitty and she is so cute and pretty and a Stanley Elvis, superb name.We chose Polly for our daughter, which I wasn't sure about, but I love it now, there certainly aren't many about and it suits her perfectly, she's very petite and feminine.
I also loved Irish names, buy was worried about constant requests for spelling and pronunciation.

randomuser · 09/10/2008 22:50

I keep hoping that people will forget about Genevieve as I hope to use it whenever I have a little girl.. can't believe DH actually went for it, really didn't think he would but it is in our top 3 for girls! Evie for short, I think..

Lurcio · 09/10/2008 23:02

Humphrey

Charlotte (Lottie)
Pheobe
Hermione
Was told "NO" for all of them by DP, instead named DD Lucy and she is now known as Lucifer by several of our friends

charliesweb · 09/10/2008 23:11

We really liked Ozzie or Ossie when pg with DS1 but the Osbournes was on then and so people would have assumed we had named him after Ozzie Osbourne. (Which we wouldn't have done we just liked the name, Ossie is a saxon name meaning spear).

I also like Mercedes but I didn't want people to think I had named DD after a car!

randomuser · 09/10/2008 23:11

Lurcio (a la Lurkio i.e. Frankie Howerd?) - 2 of those are names I called my guineapigs!

Lurcio · 09/10/2008 23:28

Yes, that's the one randomuser, although, since I've changed my name, I've been lurking more and posting less!
Was thinking that I would just have to wait til I have pets to use them... particularly Humphrey!

Lurcio · 09/10/2008 23:30

D'oh! sorry that should have said lurking less and posting more!

rosieglo · 10/10/2008 01:59

Orion and Achilles (ended ep using them as middle names for my gorgeus boys), Finn McCool - this name rocks but dh just laughed. For girls -Hero and Pheonix (may still go there!)

WhoPutThatThere · 10/10/2008 08:55

I love Dashiel (as in Dashiel Hammett, who wrote the Maltese Falcon) but DH just looked at me like I was mental when I suggested it.
We can't agree on a single name so far!

Boobz · 10/10/2008 09:13

Dashiel is our first choice for a boy! I love it -- Dash for short. It's just so cool.

oysterpots · 10/10/2008 09:39

I love Ossie too, Charliesweb, but DH said it sounds too like Aussie. I guess he's got a point.

I love Plum and Queenie for a girl too, but doubt I'd get those past DH either.

And Decca, "what, like Carol Decker...? Or Desmond Dekker?"(DH). No, you fool, like Decca Mitford.

My name is on this thread

themoon666 · 10/10/2008 09:48

Lola
Amber
Scarlett

Claire236 · 10/10/2008 10:23

If I have another boy I'm calling him Shay. dh thought I was joking but now we're ttc he's getting nervous

joshad · 10/10/2008 12:00

Jezebel - but DH said absolutely not! I guess I have to agree with him on that.
I too like Lola, but again was vetoed on grounds of nobody should be called after a Manilow showgirl or a Kinks

joshad · 10/10/2008 12:04

Mind you if we had a boy DH like the name Lorimer, after a his childhood hero Peter (Leeds Utd player). Guess it's just as well that we adopted!

hez011 · 10/10/2008 12:24

WonkaBar · 10/10/2008 13:43

We loved Galen ... and used it.

I really wanted to name my daughter Gaia, but people either loved or hated it, so we went with Juliet...but I think Gaia suits her better and wish I had used it.

LOVE Atticus, Wolfram

What is with all the Tulullah lovers (hmm)

Clockface · 10/10/2008 13:45

Anastasia.

daisyj · 10/10/2008 14:23

Mathilda - I really really love it. DH says over his dead body... hmm...

Whoever said Noah and Lola, I love those too. But DH says no. Again.

polester · 10/10/2008 14:41

Ezra, I love it but decided on Noah Ezra

florrybunda · 10/10/2008 14:44

Cheesesarnie, our daughter is called Tuppence and we call her Topsy for short (started off as Tuppy and evolved into Topsy)

Tuppence is probably not to everyone's taste and we thought it would prove to be rather contraversial with our rellies but we loved it so we just didn't tell anyone our name choices until she was born and named. By then it was too late any everyone's too polite to say anything negative

I'm actually reading this forum for ideas for #2 who is on the way. I've now compiled a lovely list to run by DH tonight

Boobz · 10/10/2008 14:46

Galen is cool - but we watch Battlestar Galactica and the chief engineer (who is secrely a Cylon) is called Galen so we decided not to. And then we liked Gabriel but the baddy from Heroes is called Gabriel (aka Sylar).

You must all think I am some kind of sci-fi geek. Honestly am not.

florrybunda · 10/10/2008 14:49

Oh, I have also loved Hermione since we did A Winter's Tale by Shakespeare at school but now feel unable to use it due to Harry Pothead

florrybunda · 10/10/2008 14:55

Sorry for gratuitous use of smileys - am over-excited by this thread!
