For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Dh apparently liked Dorothy and Conrad, but NO WAY!! So we had giant African land snails and guess what they were called??

Lots of problems with names not going with surnames here too: mine is more unusual so we decided to give that to the dcs, but it starts with a vowel so that excludes all girls' names ending in 'a' (a lot!!) eg Iona, which I like, and it rhymes with Clare, so that's out, as are Sarah and Molly (French playwright). I also like Aidan, but that would be hopeless - and Ryan would be impossible, as would Aaron (pronounced the 'proper' way)...

I soooo wanted a Cosmo if we'd had a ds first time round.

My dh canvassed it in the pub and his mates booed it down.

Bastards.

Anyway we had a dd.

Second time round we decided on Rafe. Was a bit concerned about ponciness but we had another dd. Then the Apprentice started with Raef in key role, lovely guy but I don't think I could have lived with people associating my ds with him.

I'm pretty sure I'm the first one to mention Rudy, which I am at! Just love this name, but hubby says no because our surname begins with W...

Also have loved for years the french girls name Milène (pronounced Mill-en) but fear she'd get called Myyyleeeene! in a Trigger stylie!

macaco · 07/10/2008 18:47

james

where we live in spain it would have been pronounced Hamer.

chandellina · 07/10/2008 19:42

DH wouldn't allow Spencer - i love it.
for a girl, i love Silvana but i know it just wouldn't work.

LaMonsterWeaselwolf · 07/10/2008 19:48

Neela.

But I would get fed up of explaining, that no my family has no asian links I just like the name... isn't it so beautiful though??

nowwearefour · 07/10/2008 19:52

beatrice lots of people think is posh but i think is loverly

mummybex · 07/10/2008 19:53

thalia (sounds silly, or catchy, with surname)
trixie - well you just wouldn't would you?
atticus - too poncy
gabriel- DH vetoed - too girly apparently ie, gabby and gay
ooh, and I love scarlett, would have suited my DD's, but not us, if you know what I mean.

Uniqua (I read about a school class in America that contained 4 girls named 'Unique'

Amy78 · 07/10/2008 20:26

I liked Gaby until my dad pointed out that if my daughter was anything like me she'd be known as Gobby!! Am also a teacher so many names remind me of little 'treasures' I'd rather forget!!

BTW is Silas not the psyco killer in Heroes? Just a thought!!

changer22 · 07/10/2008 20:53

This town is swimming with Clementines, Gabriels, Noahs, Lolas, and Moses. They are the more common ones

DD has a James in her class. That is unusual here.

TheGreatScootini · 07/10/2008 20:56

latermater · 07/10/2008 21:16

We almost named Mirabelle Mabel but an argument over whether it was EL or LE stopped me.

We seriously considered: Lilou, (lil-oo) Clementine (but "clem" makes me feel ill) and Aurelia (it doesn't really go with our surname). We still like Serafina..

IF we have a son we'll have far too many names to choose from:

Leonidas, Rhett, Serafin, Iorek,

I love discussing names !

merryberry · 07/10/2008 22:14

Linden, for a boy, was vetoed in our house. DH thought it too feminine sounding. then i popped an 11lb 11oz rugger bugger of a baby. So I at least got George Linden, by batting my eyelashes over the weighing scales.

lunamoon2 · 07/10/2008 22:22

BettySwollux, I love Keidis, you could have had Anthony which is nice.

I like Gabriel too, but oh hated it, must be a man thing!!
