This is so unfair! midnightsonata i must stick up for myrtle. I think it's a lovely name, it's poetic, it's origional and a very pretty, lovely name with no fancy airs and graces. I am not so keen on clarissa, daphne or emmeline.

Miyazaki · 03/10/2008 23:46

Emmeline, Cordelia Daphne all lovely. Delphine?

rowingboat · 04/10/2008 00:25

Celeste that's nice.
I think there is a Gaelic version of Daphne pronounced Dafna. It probably has a horrendous spelling, which nobody would ever get right, unless the lived in the Western Isles.
Clarissa, is just bordering on too poncy IMO.
Cordelia - is OK, thinking of the character in Buffy (most recently
Emmeline is cute and quite a good lineage.
Myrtle would almost certainly go through school being called turtle - which is quite sweet.

Love all of them, especially Emmeline, may be a little biased though as we have one at home. Very that JLo has one too, is this true?

Hassled · 06/10/2008 21:02

You'd need to read Brideshead Revisited before you name your child Cordelia. She's a nice character, but...

Have just looked on a Celebrity Baby Names of 2008 and now feel much better as JLO's baby is Emme and not Emmeline.

There are some quite interesting names on the list including:

Peanut Kai - boy
Sunday Rose - girl
Cash - boy
Ignatius Martin - boy
Harlow Winter - girl
Edie - girl
Brody - girl

SoMuchToBits · 06/10/2008 21:31

Love Cordelia

Emmeline and Clarissa just about bearable

Daphne and Myrtle - no

btw dizzywitches I love all three of your dds' names!

lunamoon2 · 07/10/2008 22:44

Hi

I absolutly loved Clarissa when I was pregnant but hubby flatly refused to accept it. Every time I sounded it out to friends they all pulled a face and said they didn't like it
Also like Emmeline and Cordelia so any of these 3!

x

lastboxoftampons · 08/10/2008 10:48

I love Emmeline and Daphne
Clarissa is okay - I like it, but I don't love it.
Cordelia reminds me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (when Violet pulls out her chewing gum when doing a TV interview and says 'Hi, Cordelia, sweetie!')

Tigerschick · 08/10/2008 11:14

I like Cordelia best from your list.
Emmeline is nice too, and it can be shortened to Emmie, which OMHO is nicer than Cordi.

Daphne reminds me of Scooby Doo.
Clarissa ... Dixon-Wright I'm afraid.
Myrtle will always be tainted by Moaning Myrtle sadly.

But, if you really like one then go for it.
Good luck with everything

Anna8888 · 08/10/2008 11:17

Clarissa

Anna8888 · 08/10/2008 11:18

Please don't choose Myrtle.

I'm Emmaline, only ever met one other!

I was always called Emmy as a child, am now Em.

vanloadtovenice · 17/10/2008 20:59

Cordelia and emmeline both good Anne of Green Gables choices! Myrtle is a step too far!

Heifer · 17/10/2008 22:00

sory but have to admit that Myrtle made me lol and chuckle so much that DH asked what I had read!

Clarissa and Emmeline get my vote but not the others at all, ever...

suspookywoo · 17/10/2008 22:13

I still stand by my statement that JLO's DD is called Emmeline/Emmalina, it has taken some serious googling to find this gossip website which agrees with me. Maximiano and Emelina

TheSmallClanger · 17/10/2008 22:18

Myrtle is a good name for a tame farm animal.
Cordelia and Clarissa are both nice, and Emmeline has something going for it. (Hint: one of these is my DD's middle name!)
Daphne sounds vaguely comical and I'm not keen.

Dottoressa · 17/10/2008 22:19

Cordelia and Clarissa were both on my list of possibilities for DD. Cordelia was my favourite, but Clarissa had Malory Towers connotations in its favour!

Both are lovely.

AbbeyA · 17/10/2008 22:28

I don't like any-Emmeline is the best of the bunch and you could shorten it to Emma.

RachieB · 18/10/2008 16:28

cordelia was my grandmothers name

i like Emmeline out of your list, shortened to Emme / Emmie

vesela · 19/10/2008 22:25

I love Emmeline - it's DD's middle name and would have been her first if she didn't have a close cousin called Emma.

LuLuBai · 20/10/2008 10:47

Daphne - I've always had a huge soft spot for this name although I might not dare use it myself as it is perceived as so unfashionable. I think it has a really pretty sound. I would love to meet a little Daphne!

Cordelia - Pretty but I would always be haunted by the image of Lear walking onto the stage in the final scene holding the dead body of his only good daughter.

Clarissa - Softer sounding than Cordelia and less haunting. I really like this (also in this vein Cassandra, Melissa or Marisa)

Emmeline - Too close to Emily / Amelie etc of which there are just soooo many (not that I dislike those names - just over popular)

Myrtle - I would like to like this name, but I really can't bring myself to. I have a Myrtle bush outside my front door and it is pretty and smells nice, and the word is linked to Venus and love etc etc but I just don't think it sounds very nice. Sorry.

2Helenback · 20/10/2008 14:26

Loving cordelia. Am not allowed this as dh says is too posh and too Buffy the Vampire slayer. Can I help it if I'm a snooty stake wielder?
