Xanthe, Eve or Anya??

minkersmum · 21/09/2008 23:52

What is the nicest of the 3??

Liking them all but reservations are

Eve too normal a name, not unusual enough for my liking.

Xanthe maybe touching on pretentious?

Anya too harsh/strong sounding.

My daughter lkely to be very tall, over 6ft, which one would suit best??

whatulookinat yes did watch wifeswap which is how we got to Xanthe, we had liked Iolanthe but thought to much of a tongue twister so when i heard Xanthe i thought it was similar but easier on the tongue!! Off it now anyway!! prefering something short.

When my mum mentioned Xanthe to my dad he said... 'oh for f* sake'.... kind of puts ya off!!!

Its just hard to find one that dp and i both love, we seem to have different taste at the mo.... last time so much easier!

Thanks for your opinion

Edie is a nice name! I like it!

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 22/09/2008 15:19

I love that list. I love Anya and I love Eve. I think Evie is v. pop right now, and Anna and Anya more 'steady', less succeptible to peaks and troughs of popularity, so I think I'd pick Anya.

Xanthe is nice but I prefer Xenia. I know a Xenia. She's about 65! ZENee-ah. That's how she says it anyway, I don't know if mner xenia is zeenee-ah or zenee-ah.

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 22/09/2008 15:20

PS, does a Xanthe have to tall? I think she has to be medium-heighted but with Olive skin

ditheringdora · 22/09/2008 15:23

I think of Eve as small and dark, after the character in Circle of Friends, I love the name.
I also like Nan btw but can foresee all kinds of confusion with this.

We were going to call our baby Xanthe...despite being absolutely certain we'd never have a blonde child (and that is what it means). Any way the child did arrive blond, but he was a boy...so we don't have a Xanthe. It was still top of the list for baby 2...but he was a he too. Ah well, if we ever have a girl surprise...

minkersmum"i asked opinions on a couple of names..."
yes, YES you did - and i gave one, just not the one you wanted
"... was just laughing at your suggestion that pretty names should be avoided incase your child turns out fat and ugly.. your words not mine."

no not exactly, i didn't think the names pretty to begin with as i made clear in my first post. I think they are ugly names. On a pretty kid thats ok, but people don't always have pretty kids and its not somethng that we consider as mothers.

"...whether you're fat and ugly has bugger all to do with it!..."

i agree, which is why your comments refering to me as such were underhanded and not needed

."..Personally i only get involved in name threads if i have something useful to contribute!! But then we're all 'different'!"

ahhh you only wanted people agreeing with you and then if they don't you insult them

i see. got it

What about Eva?

Similar to Eve but a little more unusual.
Other LO's might like it if they are fans of Wall-e!

DartmoorMama · 22/09/2008 16:14

I know 2 people called Xanthe bizarrely. Its a lovely name.

Eve is so common at the moment but lovely. Depends whether that bothers you. About every other little girl I know at the moment is called Eve, the rest are called grace and I am not joking.

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 22/09/2008 16:19

I love Fergus!! I think Anya matches better. Both have a broadly northern European feel.

Fergus is so celtic, next to Xanthe? And I laughed at Xanthe Cooper!! Taht doesn't sound great. Xanthe Zachariades or Xanthe Goldberg or something like that would sound like a Danielle STeele character. But Xanthe Cooper is oil and water somehow! What's your sur name?

Fergus and Xanthe. Hmmm. I mean, it's not ludicrous, but it's not an excellent match either.

I agree with the pp that Eve/eva have reached critical mass now! I do like Eve a lot though.

Anya Eve? I guess Xenia would be a bit too Xenia warrior. Damn her, ruining a good name.

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 22/09/2008 16:20

Ps, it took a long time for my dd to grow into her name. Their names were quite elegant and adult, not at all cutesy or ending in ee. So for ages, my children were Pookie and Splodge.

singyswife · 22/09/2008 21:41

Does dd have a name yet>????????

Pinkchampagne · 22/09/2008 22:22

I like Anya & Eve best from your list.

weblette · 22/09/2008 22:25

Anya

FairLadyRantALot · 22/09/2008 22:30

Hm...Xanthe doesn't really sound like a girlsname to me...seems more a boys name, sorry...

Anya is o.k.
Eve is lovely

how about Anoushka or Tatyana...the ones I know are all tall leggy stunning girls

Perpendicular · 22/09/2008 22:46

Eve wins hands down, classy and sophisticated. Anya always sounds whiney and common to me - there's a mum at the school with one and the way she says 'nya' puts my teeth on edge. Xante is too try-hard.

daisy99divine · 22/09/2008 23:19

Poor old Mimkersmum, i have read this right through and love the side line with Custardo

and you're the tired and hormonal one! lol

for what it's worth I really liked Xanthe but have got fed up with it by the end of this thread
Not wanting to put a spanner in the works, how about Thalia

It seems to me to have a bit of a feel of the Xanthe but be less used than Eve and sort of short?
hope it helps. we spent 3 days choosing a name and when we did (I was still in hospital) the nurse said "have you finally chosen a name?" yes I said, and gave the wrong one

singyswife · 23/09/2008 12:08

DO you have a name yet????????????

pamelat · 23/09/2008 13:36

Anya is very pretty

Dont like xanthe

Yep, Eve is over used.

pamelat · 23/09/2008 13:38

Our DD is an Ella but we call her "pumpkin, potato, lump, pea, pog, nog, peanut, honey" etc.

minkersmum · 23/09/2008 21:15

Still no name for this wee lady!!

Have considered Olive but lots of people have hated it (including my mum) others love it.

Completely at a loss as to what name to pick!

daisy99divine love your post , made me smile!!

Any name suggestions welcome!

Clara
Daisy
Pearl
Lara
Mimosa
Hebe
Mabel

Beatrix

minkersmum · 23/09/2008 22:02

I love Olive but my mum going on about 'on the buses' DP and i still liking it tho.
Alot of people saying 'thats an old ladies name, not very pretty, prefer Olivia'
Personally think Olive far classier.

Love Hebe but think of Hebe jeebies... or am i pronouncing it wrongly?

Love Florence too but DP says no to that.

Like Daisy too but she's likely to be over 6 ft and think that its not such a good name for a tall girl?? Is that stupid??

I know shes mine and i'm biased but when i look at her i just can't find a name nice enough, shes all sallow (physiological jaundice!) has thick dark hair and really lovely, My mum saw her for first time today and thinks she looks lke a little eskimo baby! Maybe call her Eskimo!!

Like Luna because of way it sounds but just read huge thread on the name and as i thought it brings most people to the word lunatic! Shame as so pretty.

How about Anouk?

I love this name - she sounds like she's special enough to be called Anouk!
