Morgan? Is this chavvy?

Always liked this name - in my mind I think of Morgan Le Fay & I've always thought of it as a bit ethereal. Just noticed though that Bianca on Eastenders has a daughter called this. I had it in mind for my next DD due Jan but this is making me reconsider. Don't usually watch EE -was at my mum's- & have only ever met one Morgan before. Has it become chav?

my friends son is called Morgan

Twims · 05/09/2008 23:23

Eastenders use it as a boys name which I think is better than a female version - but yes has chavvy connotations for me

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 05/09/2008 23:24

Chavtastic.

I know a few male Morgans & they have all been naughty little boys, like all the (male) Jordans I know

I think it's fine. It's a real name with plenty of history. It depends on the wearer as to whether or not it is 'chavvy'.

I love the name Morgan...but prefer it for a boy....
for a girl Morgaine would be nicer, imo

WendyWeber -funny you should say that about naughty boys because when I take DD to swimming lessons the only name you hear being shouted by the swimming teachers (in a pool of approx. 40 children and 8 teachers) is Morgan "Morgan stop messing about! Morgan leave x alone! Morgan I said wait! Morgan don't hit her!"

Similarly theres a naughty one at DS's nursery.

(Disclaimer -obviously I'm not tarring all Morgans with the same brush, but my instant thoughts were the same as Wendys)

spicemonster · 06/09/2008 10:34

It's a welsh boy's name (not nec a surname - it was my grandad's middle name).

I wouldn't use it for a girl and unless you have Welsh roots, probably not for a boy.

And I really, really object to the use of the word chavvy but that's by the by

AllieBongo · 06/09/2008 10:36

as much as i hate to say this, i find it a tad chav..

treacletart · 06/09/2008 10:37

I think its lovely, but yes, alas, chavtastic - sorry

I think it is too.

twentypence · 06/09/2008 10:40

Okay for a boy, Morgaine sounds like a painkiller for migraine.

Hadn't really thought of it as boy's name - (only male have heard of is Morgan Freeman). Morgan Le Fay (Fey) was King Arthur's sister , Morgan of the faeries. I live in Scotland & it is very uncommon which is why I wondered about the 'chav' thing. Guess there's lots of naughty little male Morgans running around down south. Anyway you've put me off. Back to the drawing board.

I like it for boys or girls....... like someone else said the name is in the wearer!

chandellina · 06/09/2008 11:19

i like it for a girl or boy. don't think it's too strongly associated with either gender.

bamboostalks · 06/09/2008 11:21

Definitely.

jvs · 06/09/2008 11:22

What about Brogan. My friend has a dd called Brogan...... sounds similar to Morgan (ish)?

AbbeyA · 06/09/2008 15:19

I don't like surnames as first names. They are better for boys, not at all pretty for a girl.

Blandmum · 06/09/2008 15:27

brogan sounds like shoes

what is this fixation with surnames for first names?

snarky · 06/09/2008 15:29

Morgan le Fay is quite an old usage of Morgan as a girl's first name though, isn't it? I don't see why people are insisting it's only a surname when clearly it isn't
