Morgan? Is this chavvy?

Always liked this name - in my mind I think of Morgan Le Fay & I've always thought of it as a bit ethereal. Just noticed though that Bianca on Eastenders has a daughter called this. I had it in mind for my next DD due Jan but this is making me reconsider. Don't usually watch EE -was at my mum's- & have only ever met one Morgan before. Has it become chav?

the original meaning of Naughty was 'worthless', now it means something else. Morgan may have started as a first name (many surnames did), but it is predominantly a surname now, or a boys name in Wales

snarky · 06/09/2008 15:33

I think most people have heard of Morgan le Fay though. And I have met several female Morgans. The only reason for it to be seen as 'just a surname these days' is because people keep insisting that it is!

Can't people name their own children without withering remarks? I hate these threads.

Blandmum · 06/09/2008 15:35

Well, if people ask for comments, I guess they are fair game.....

SJLTM · 06/09/2008 16:27

There is a Morgan Le Fay Drive near me

Sidge · 06/09/2008 16:31

We were thinking of using it as a middle name if we'd had a boy - Samuel Morgan.

Not keen as a first name though.

agree with Martianbishop - and yes, Morgan is a bit chavvy IMO

Littleface · 06/09/2008 16:36

I've used it as a middle name for my DD, it was my mums maiden name. Wouldn't of used it as a first name though

handlemecarefully · 06/09/2008 16:48

Yes it is, somewhat. Best to avoid.

bloomingfedup · 06/09/2008 17:38

Yes is chavvy.

BouncingTurtle · 06/09/2008 17:48

Crikey - I hope Morgangee doesn't spot this thread...

Though in her line of work I'm sure she's been called much worse than chavvy!!

snarky · 06/09/2008 17:55

I think calling people chavvy is much more vulgar than giving your child a 'surname for a first name'

handlemecarefully · 07/09/2008 00:16

I embrace the word chav. I think it is perfectly apt for a small sub set of our population.

debzmb62 · 07/09/2008 00:33

we have a morgan in the family don,t really like it her mum and dad are what you all chav.s lol i love the name megan must admit !! maybe because i have a megan !! mind you i do also have a gary a stacey a matthew and a owen to !!

my freind called her baby boy romeo is that a chav name ?? and wonder were thay got it from !! i just call him jim lol

darlee · 07/09/2008 00:36

Chav is a vulgar term to describe this type of person.
It is more likely to be used by the lower classes sounds better.

3andnomore · 07/09/2008 08:45

debs... your friend has a son called Romeo and you call him Jim....wow...I bet your friend really appreciates that...

debzmb62 · 07/09/2008 10:05

trust me its a family thing we can have fun she laughs everyone call,s him jim !! we have such a big family a big caring family we don,t take offence at things ! sorry i did,nt mean freind she,s my neice and its her son romeo and honestly she does't take offence i have a big family my baby for instance is my mums 38th grandchild and she,s just had her 40th greatgrandcild you should see some of there names and none of them are the same

3andnomore · 07/09/2008 11:17

lol...tis o.k. then...

bloomingfedup · 07/09/2008 11:46

Just because someone is 'lower class' does not make them a chav. Chav's have acertain look.

debzmb62 · 07/09/2008 15:31

blooming fed up is there 3 types !
high class
middle class
lower casss !!
or maybe bottom of the class !! in my area there i a type they normaly wear burbrey hats /shirts/ etc see i can,t even spell burberry lol

kittybrown · 07/09/2008 15:41

Gosh, such vitriol over a name. My daughter (7) is called Morgan so maybe I'm sensitive.
I'm glad when we chose her name nobody sneered at it (at least to our faces)!
She's named after Morgan le Fay and it certainly suits her.
I'd much rather be a chav than be in a perpetual state of anxiety over whether I was percieved as one.

debzmb62 · 07/09/2008 16:30

ah bless n all honesty i like the name morgan !! its a pretty name i think but i do only like it for a girl must admit i don't know any boys with the name to be honest i really think when people call there children "different" names whether other people think they are naff names the name always seems to suit the child !! what's the worse name you've heard ? or a name that sounds wrong with a surname !

kittywise · 07/09/2008 16:34

I am biased atm, the Morgan I know is one of the most unpleasant little shits I've ever come across.

He is middle class, his mother is a Boden wearer and her son can do no wrong, so carte blanche for him to bully other kids.

ChukkyPig · 07/09/2008 16:36

I know a 6yo morgan, she is very sweet.

TBH I always thought of it as an american sort of name for a girl, don't know why.

Chumpalina · 07/09/2008 22:18

Here in Wales Morgan is only ever used for males, it is common to meet a Morgan in his 50s or aged 5 and doesn't really have 'chav' associations as it's a traditional name.
It's so mad how names can have different associations depending which part of the country you're in!
