Astrid? My chum thinks it's chavvy.

admittedly, he's in the minority (of one, as it happens), but he's being a bit strident about it.
Would have been DS' name, and now is back on the table.
It's the only girl's name i really like, apart from evangeline, but don't like the Evie-shortening.
Opinions welcome.

is that not what the famous face cream from the 80's was called?

the one in the blue pot!

LuLuBai · 14/08/2008 17:47

Nivea?

Umlellala · 14/08/2008 17:58

I like.
What about Astra as an alternative?

EachPeachPearMum · 14/08/2008 19:46

That was Astral Cream!

vinous · 14/08/2008 19:50

Did he elaborate on why he thought it was chavvy? I'll eat my hat if he's met any chavs called Astrid.

PuppyMonkey · 14/08/2008 19:52

Not chavvy. Just cold and humourless

mummynewname · 14/08/2008 20:38

or you could say.. adult!

and seeing as she's going to be an adult for longer than a little girl...? Poppys, bloody Rubys, Daisies, Mollies, Lulus, Pixies and the like all grow up eventually ...

Cocodrillo · 14/08/2008 20:42

It's deffo not chavvy, quite the opposite I would say.

Astrid's a beautiful name. It's on my shortlist for DC3.

ChukkyPig · 14/08/2008 20:54

How can a name be humourless? Or with humour? Unless you name your kids Groucho, Harpo, Groucho and Zeppo?

Baffled.

Also slighty shirty as if and when I get knocked up again, Astrid was at the top of the list along with Greta. I already have an Ingrid. Pah!

Maybe better head off to a thread entitled "loving scandinavian/germanic names for no apparent reason"!!!

minouminou · 14/08/2008 20:56

no, vinous, he couldn't explain it, despite me trying to get it out of him several times!

chukkypig, i'm right there with ya on that thread!
i think it's because these names sound more adult that i'm drawn to them
let's hope you get knocked up again

Oops!!!

Fanlight · 14/08/2008 21:03

No it's not chavvy at all over here...very very unusual, makes me think of Astrid Lindgren who wrote the 'Lotta' books (and Pippi Longstocking?)

I had it on my list for years

sadly never had a girl!

ChukkyPig · 14/08/2008 21:04

If I start a thread like that though, I have to be careful not to let DH see.

For DC1 he wanted Thor or Odin if it was a boy. You can't name a child after a god! Well OK Mohammed and Jesus are quite popular but you know what I mean.

A girl called Astrid in the UK is one thing. Little Thor marching around the playground is quite another. And imagine if he turned out to be a sensitive type!

Apologies to anyone who has just got Thor & Odin off to bed...

Fanlight · 14/08/2008 21:06

Oh gawd, that's brilliant...I had an ex (and nearly had a baby with him) who wanted to name it Hereward (boy) or something else very vikingish for a girl...can't remember, Oh that's going to bug me now...it was bad, really bad...

drowninginlaundry · 14/08/2008 21:07

you know what - I am 19 wks pregnant with a little girl after two boys and she is going to be called Astrid

so yes, I love it!

drowninginlaundry · 14/08/2008 21:19

(I am scandinavian - but not burly )

ChukkyPig · 14/08/2008 21:22

Also for me, the name Astrid relates to this vessel, which my family are quite attached to:

here

Does this help? Not very chavvy I would say. The good ship Waynetta is a small rowing boat moored off Southend.

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 24/08/2008 23:06

Astrid is our top girls name and I am preg with DC2. I love it, as it sounds a bit like it means stars but doesn't actually and is a good strong girl's name - like OPs I am not a fan of soft/ flowery names for girls.

My only worry is our surname begins with so it could mean a DD called Astrid E - is that a bit too teasable??

periselene · 25/08/2008 18:11

I think I could get to like it.

periselene · 25/08/2008 18:12

as for being chavvy ... on what planet is Astrid a chavvy name?????
Nonsense!

msdemeanor · 25/08/2008 18:15

I like it. And not chavvy! Is he confused with Heidi? (which is a perfectly nice name, but Kerry Katona named her daughter Heidi)

frazzledoldbag34 · 25/08/2008 18:21

not chavvy.
but maybe a bit butch? (am also thinking swedish masseur when I say this)

also you'd need to be very blonde, beautiful and blue-eyed to live up to the name.
Other than that, go for it!

periselene · 25/08/2008 18:36

Could equally be ridiculously slender, willowy, pale, blonde .... a name with scope!
