Astrid? My chum thinks it's chavvy.

admittedly, he's in the minority (of one, as it happens), but he's being a bit strident about it.
Would have been DS' name, and now is back on the table.
It's the only girl's name i really like, apart from evangeline, but don't like the Evie-shortening.
Opinions welcome.

I have an Astrid. I think it's a beautiful name.

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/08/2008 16:45

I know 2 Astrids (both from MN), and don't think it's remotely chavvy. Quite surprised that anyone would think it was tbh.

CuckooClockWorkOrange · 13/08/2008 16:48

Astrid would work here then. The only thing to bear in mind would be that you'd often be asked if you were German/Scandinavian/Dutch. If that wouldn't bother you, then why not?

I am in Norway. It is neither a hard nor abrupt name. The way it is pronounced is very soft. It is a feminine and pretty name. The D at the end of Astrid is silent.

3andnomore · 13/08/2008 16:57

I suppose in germany we always pronounced it quite hard, and also, any girl with the name would often be teased and called "Arschtritt which means "kick in teh a**e"

belgo · 13/08/2008 16:59

It's considered a normal name in Belgium.

I like it.

Swedes · 13/08/2008 17:00

Naturally, we are so vairy posh that we pronounce all our As as Es. So it's Estrid in this house.

HeadFairy · 13/08/2008 17:00

definitely not chavvy. Makes me think of beautiful icy blonde scandinavian Bond girl type.

belcantavinissima · 13/08/2008 17:00

i love it, not at all chavvy imho

hellebores · 13/08/2008 17:12

Maybe he doesn't understand chavvy?
As is low class.

It's a great name - powerful, unusual, serious but beautiful. Show him this thread.

I'm sick of the vogue for all these pretty pretty feminine-ending overused borning and not at all unique names people seem to want to bestow on their children these days whether they suit them or not- I speak of Poppy, Ruby, Daisy, Molly and et aliae..yawnzzzzzzzzzzz

hellebores · 13/08/2008 17:13

As IN low class!

YeahBut · 13/08/2008 17:21

The only Astrid I know is a rather lovely lady from Germany. Great name.

Ceelo · 13/08/2008 18:53

i love the name, how does it sound with your last name?

minouminou · 13/08/2008 20:32

ceelo - it's a double-barreled surname, and, along with a decent middle name, it'll fit it just perfick
thanks for the support, guys, some great comments
astrid it is

I love Astrid, was on my list of girls names for last baby (who turned out to be a boy anyway) and was, co-inciedntally the name of the midwife that delivered him.

EachPeachPearMum · 13/08/2008 20:56

Perhaps he is thinking of Kylie's character in Dr Who, and maybe that will encourage less desirables to use the name?

It was the only name wanted for DD.
It is a strong name, but that is why we chose it. It has character!

It means divine beauty or beautiful goddess depending on which way you take it.

Tinker · 13/08/2008 21:04

Oh, I think this is a great name. Would be a contender for no 3. Wasn't there a 70s terrorist called Astrid? Astrid Proll? Cool.

mamalovesmojitos · 13/08/2008 21:40

love it. i think it is a very pretty name.

SilkCutMama · 13/08/2008 21:42

really not sure why but ir makesd me think of "little shop of horrors"

Not keen I'm afraid - sounds quite harsh imo

  • like Ingrid or Enid

REally sorry

tissy · 13/08/2008 21:46

lovely name

bohemianbint · 13/08/2008 21:47

This is weird - it would have been DS's name, if he'd been a girl, and we pretty much narrowed down our very shortlist of girls names (literally, there's about 3 on it, we're really struggling!) down to Astrid last night.

I'm still not 100%, probably 99.9%. But it's definitely not chavvy!!!

LuLuBai · 14/08/2008 16:50

I like it. Cute, quirky and strong all at once.

When I was pg with DD my DH vetoed any name that conjured up a saucy image of a mountain milk-maid in a mini-dirndl with immensely long golden legs and immensely long golden hair in plaits. (Think Cameron Diaz in Charlie's Angels Full Throttle). So that ruled out Heidi, Inge, Astrid etc etc.
