Opinions please. I love it because of the last line of the children's novel Skellig by David Almond...

Lovely name

Celery · 05/08/2008 07:31

I love it. I think it's such gift of a name to give to a daughter. So pretty and happy, and, well, joyful!

DontCallMeBaby · 05/08/2008 07:34

Lovely. I'm not enormously keen on the only Joy I've ever actually known, but unlike many names it actually transcends that. DD has a version of Cinderalla in which eponymous heroine's real name turns out to be Joy, which always makes me sniffle a little at the end.

Ledodgy · 05/08/2008 07:52

It's a lovely name but beware if she's not always of a happy demenour. Sil has been plagued by a life of 'why are you called Joy when you're quite miserable!' whenever she's having an off day.

Ineedsomesleep · 05/08/2008 09:31

Love it as I have an Aunty Joy, she is named Joyce. Wish we had given it to DD as a middle name but not sure of giving it as a first name as I agree with Ledodgy.

EachPeachPearMum · 05/08/2008 09:38

moulesfrites what is the last line of Skellig please?

TheMaskedPoster · 05/08/2008 09:46

Love the name Joy (although I too knew a Joy who was not a Joy) ... would have had it for DD2's middle name - but finally decided on MIL's instead (Jean).

PinkPussyCat · 05/08/2008 09:48

Twinkie1 · 05/08/2008 09:52

I love it - my Auntie Joy is like my super cool trendy mum (as my mum isn't around anymore) - so she makes me smile as does her lovely name.

CuckooClockWorkShy · 05/08/2008 09:52

It's lovely. Makes a lovely change from Grace. MUCH prefer Joy.

CuckooClockWorkShy · 05/08/2008 09:53

Grace is given without a thoguht! will all those Graces be gracious ?

Mikafan · 05/08/2008 09:54

mazzystar · 05/08/2008 09:56

my 16 yr old dd has a friend with this name-ti beautiful

moulesfrites · 05/08/2008 11:11

Each Peach, It's something like, "In the end, we diecided to call her Joy...". The main character Micheal is talking about his baby sister who has been ill throughout the novel, but the eponymous angel Skellig has been watching over her. A beautiful novel.

I think it's a bit middle aged really. Auntie Joy sums it up.

I prefer Bliss

MmeLindt · 05/08/2008 11:16

I have an Auntie Joy too, she is lovely and pretty cheerful most of the time

Dd2's 3rd name. Love it. Sums her up as well. Correction - summed her up before she became a teenager!

ninedragons · 05/08/2008 12:11

Beautiful and under-used.

Mamazon · 05/08/2008 12:13

was at college and then Uni with a Joy.
she was lovely as is the name.

I'm afraid it conjurs up images of an Asian prostitute.
