I have a son who has a surname sOunding name. It is quite unusual but not unheard of. I am now pregnant again due early december and can't think of any other surname sounding names for boys that don't sound really chavvy, anyone got any ideas? Got names for a girl sorted its just a boys name that will go with our son's name that we are struggling on. All suggestions more than welcome!

I love Riley too and if it were solely my decision that would be his name by my husband hates it with a passion! Cooper is lovely oo never heard of that as a first name before but really like it.

Both my surnames have been mentioned on this thread. I think it is perfectly OK to follow tradition if they are in your family, but odd to choose unconnected ones at random.

mum2taylor · 31/07/2008 15:39

ooooo cb88 my daughter is taylor and my step son is Bailey!!!

I love Harley for a girl but I wouldnt have the courage to use after Nicole Ritchie using it

mum2taylor · 31/07/2008 15:40

I also love Lennon and Dillon for a boy....those are also surnames.

I love Harris.

I'm not a fan either, or so I thought, but a lot of my favourite names, Donald, Gregory, Howard, Victor, Bruce, Douglas,,,,,,well, they are sur name names. So how about one of those?

Fraser and Spencer are two of the best sur name names. Some of the things on the other side of the Atlantic would make me wince. Tucker (rhymes with fcuker fgs!) and Hoyt and Colton and Royston. Taht kind of let's pluck a sur name from thin air is a bad idea.

But I will give Spencer and Fraser my blessing!

OK, thought of a good one, Edison after the light bulb guy! Eddie.

Miller/Millar

Some cool names for boys on this thread! Cool boys names much harder IMO than girls. Personally love Lennon too - my maternal granfather is Leo or Len as a nickname and his father Leon so we thought about Lennon for DS2, very briefy as it would have been odd with Harrison !
And love Cooper, Riley, Dillon... I know of a little girl called Harley, she's nearly 4 and very cute!
This is making me feel broody!!!

AbbeyA · 31/07/2008 15:47

If you dig back in your family history you can probably find a nice one. My mother's maiden name has been mentioned and one of my great grandmothers.

AbbeyA, don't we all choose names that are totally random? My first daughter's name was the Hebrew for my Mum's name and Tink's name is totally random, I saw it and liked it. There are some surnames that totally scream "surname" but most, read this thread, are quite common first names too.

My surname is on this list and it does seem weird, even though I know logically it's not, it's just I'm so used to it being a surname.

CuckooClockWiseCrack · 31/07/2008 15:48

Chandler with Chad for short? Far too American? I like that, but I hate to look like the World's biggest Friends fan.

abbeyA , in scotland its very common to have a surmname used as a first name
so much so some names are not even thought of as surnames, just 'names'

and they are totally random. maybe not so 400 years ago, but today they are.

Fimbo · 31/07/2008 15:58

Yes in my mum's over 60's keep fit class their is a man called Morrison my mum almost choked the first time she heard it.

My personal favourite is Campbell (another Scottish one!).

My ds has the middle name Duncan

My dh has the middle name Ogilvie which was his mum's maiden name

she reckons it sounds boyish but she does love it

katiepotatie · 31/07/2008 16:02

What about Flynn? I know a georgous Harris, but I think it's after the Island.

Fimbo · 31/07/2008 16:07

Campbell is such a fab name along with Struan.

My boss was called Ramsay.

AbbeyA · 31/07/2008 16:07

I suppose, logically ,we just choose names we like. It just seems weird to me because it is my surname. I know a dog with the name and always do a double take on that!
