I know a female Aubrey but it's usually male. Not keen on it, to be honest.

LynetteScavo · 27/07/2008 20:38

I've jsut checked the Oford Dictionary of First Names adn Aburey is male and female.

You learn something new every day!

IMO, it is not a good name for a female.

girliefriend · 27/07/2008 20:47

I think its rubbish, there are loads of great old fashioned boys name beginning with A, ALFIE, ALBERT (ALBIE), ADAM, UMMM ERRR WELL A FEW ANYWAY!

anonymama · 27/07/2008 20:51

Male, bit old-fashioned. Think your DS might hate you for it!

EachPeachPearMum · 27/07/2008 21:01

I think its quite a nice name, but the only Aubrey I knew had severe personal hygiene problems and whiffed to high heaven!

hatwoman · 27/07/2008 21:06

I like it. It sounds a bit like the new Alfie/Albert/Arthur if you ask me.

pointydog · 27/07/2008 21:09

Boy's name. Upper crust Victoriana

MarianneM · 29/07/2008 14:01

Aubrey is a lovely boy's name! Until we discovered that we're having a girl Aubrey was one of our options. Go for it! Did you know that it comes from Old German and means elf?

WipingAssAndTakingNames · 29/07/2008 14:03

In the US it's very definitely become a female name in recent years. If you're not in the US, that's not at all helpful.

I know it's traditionally a boy's name, though I don't think I'd ever use it for a boy because it does have such a slightly feminine ring to it.

LynetteScavo · 29/07/2008 21:34

There are little girls in the US called Aubrey?

Thanks for the warning - I might have pmsl if I'd heard it in a park or something.

MKG · 29/07/2008 21:53

Aubrey is definitely a girl's name.

seeker · 29/07/2008 21:57

It's a male name - but if you have to ask, think of the issues your ds/dd will have for their whole life if you use it.

Please don't.l
.

AbbeyA · 29/07/2008 22:04

It is a boy's name and not likely to be popular.

MaryAnnSingleton · 29/07/2008 22:05

boys name - Aubrey Beardsley was a fine illustrator

DRAGON30 · 29/07/2008 22:12

Male, posh and old-fashioned. It's one of those names, like Auberon or Cecil, that are male, but seem feminine. The only one I can think of is Aubrey Beardsley (Victorian artist - fab drawings/prints!).

nappyaddict · 04/08/2008 01:43

either

solo · 04/08/2008 01:51

My dads middle name is Aubrey, but I think in the States it is popular for girls...I considered it for my Dd...I think it's pretty and unusual without being a bit chav!

clairebear88 · 04/08/2008 11:03

Its unisex i reacon but its more a mans name. I imagine a little old man with walking stick wearing tweed. ( sorry )
