dd1 is Melanie and we sometimes call her Millie

Raahh · 17/07/2008 16:21

i have a Millicent- it really suits dd, who is nearly 2 and very strong minded

Even as a given name, i like the look of Millie with 'ie' not Milly. No reason though.

I actually chose 'Millie' first, and Millicent came after. I never considered Amelia etc

And i loved Milly Molly Mandy as a kid!!

thelittlestbadger · 17/07/2008 16:22

Jamila?

Raahh · 17/07/2008 16:26

just remembered that Milly Molly Mandy's full name was Millicent Margaret Amanda- never got how she got Molly from Margaret...

OurHamsterisevil · 17/07/2008 22:24

Raahh. That got me thinking about diminuitives on Margaret. Such as Molly, Peggy? etc. How many are there. And why do they have no relation at all to the name

Is there a reason that you want a longer name to be shortened to Milly/Millie and don't want to use the name itself?

OurHamsterisevil · 17/07/2008 23:10

Bluenose - I just believe that a child should have a proper name, that can then be shortened to a pet name. Its just the way I feel about things

Ok.

InTheDollshouse · 18/07/2008 13:56

Molly is a diminutive of Mary, not Margaret! That's also where Polly comes from (Mary > Molly > Polly).

InTheDollshouse · 18/07/2008 13:57

Similar to Margaret > Meg > Peggy.

JulesJules · 18/07/2008 14:05

DH's favourite while we were waiting for DD2 was Melisande (it is Old French) which I think is v pretty and would shorten well to Millie.

Ellica · 18/07/2008 14:47

Matilda???

my brothers name was kehan(Kian) but his Nick name was George. Dont ask why i have no idea an uncle said it once and it stuck. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you want a nickname to be it might just not happen so make sure your happy otherwise just call her Millie

scorpio1 · 18/07/2008 14:48

Do you like Milla?

Ledodgy · 18/07/2008 14:50

I know an Amelie that is shortened to Milly.

NineYearsOfNappies · 18/07/2008 16:26

Matilda?
something hyphenated like Amy-Lisa?

OurHamsterisevil · 18/07/2008 16:42

Ooh like Melisande, that is quite sweet.

Milly in "This life" was short for Jamilla.

In my mum's house Milly is short for " what's that daft dog done now..."

Some other forms: Melesina, Melicent (sorry, sounds like Millicent), Camille - all can be considered long forms of Milly. Other forms can be seen here: baby girl name Milly

nailpolish · 19/07/2008 16:51

Melissa

3andnomore · 19/07/2008 17:08

Ludmilla?

Raahh · 19/07/2008 21:50

as an aside, Millie seems impossible for some people to say...

Ds (5.5), slight lisp calls Dd (2) Moo-ey!!

Bless
