(When I see it written I always want to say Ta-rah!)

AnnieAreYouOkAreYouOkAnnie · 15/07/2008 11:16

Tara \t(a)-ra\ is pronounced TAH-rah. It is of Gaelic and Sanskrit origin, and its meaning is "hill; star". Ancient Tara was the site of the "stone of destiny" on which Irish kings resided, and Margaret Mitchell probably had this in mind when she named the fictional home of Scarlett O'Hara in her 1936 novel "Gone With the Wind". Hindu mythology: Tara is one of the names of the wife of Shiva.

A beautiful Irish name. Not chavvy IMO. Nor a dog name.

tullytwo · 15/07/2008 11:19

Crikey - I am a chav then!

I never knew!

Mind you they didnt exist when I was named!

Definitely a dog name though - especially alsations for some reason!

MrsBadger · 15/07/2008 11:46

I knew it from the Sanskrit/Hindi angle and know several, all quite posh and not at all chavvy.

For a boy or a girl?

janeashersbookofspacecakes · 15/07/2008 12:10

No. It souns like it but you don't often get chavs called Tara. It's either dogs or private school girls.

Rachmumoftwo · 15/07/2008 12:27

I like Tara, it is a name that won't sound silly as the child grows up. I have stopped caring about dog/human names now. I draw the line at calling a little boy Rover or Fido, though.

barbiehouse · 15/07/2008 12:55

its actually for a middle name, but on announcing the name, my mum said straight away that she didn't like it, and then MIL, whoi is normally quite polite, also made out that she didn;'t like it. My dh is now suggesting that we change it, but i am adamant that we don't as it should be our choice alone, and we shouldn't pander to their rudeness. Just thought I should check that it wasn't considered a horrific name by everyone except me.

This is THE uber-posh Tara (she's very well-connected, you know )

Tortington · 15/07/2008 16:52

depends on your accent

you need a certain accent

any pole accent country wide - will not suffice

be that

liverpool - i think it would sound the worst

but croyden - pretty bad.

AtheneNoctua · 15/07/2008 16:56

I knew a tara once. She was a total slut.

It's an Irish name, I think. They are probably not all sluts.

Tortington · 15/07/2008 16:58

pmsl!

QOD · 15/07/2008 17:01

Hey!!!
My name's Tara, I am not a chav, not particularily posh, went to grammar school and live in the sarf east

(However, in secondary school, my best friend was called Heidi, we were once out, having a piddle in some bushes when this man started bellowing....

"TARA ... HEIDI... get here NOW!"

we were terrified, we were at a beach party & had snuck off as I say, for a piddle.... suddenly 2 alsations bounded up to us.......... how's that for a coo-inkydink!)

moosemama · 15/07/2008 17:02

We had this name on quite high up on our list but have had several quite negative reactions to it so its now fallen by the wayside. (For us it was more evocative of Ireland than anything else.)

I have only ever known one Tara (other than Tara Palmer-K) and she was really quite posh.

Interestingly, I have been a 'dog' person for over 25 years and despite competing and being around 'lots' of dogs have never come across a dog called Tara. Lots of Mollys, Poppys, Sashas, Bellas, Trixies even a couple of Katies and a Sarah - but no Taras, weird.

moosemama · 15/07/2008 17:03

Ooh yes,

Quite a few Heidi(s) and Freya(s) too!

LongLiveGreenElizabeth · 15/07/2008 19:36

Not Chav at all. It's a classic Irish name imo.

Tamara with Tara for short takes the Irish out of it, but gives you more options.
