What are your thoughts on Billy for a boy? Is he likely to be teased for his name rhyming with willy?

I wouldn't have thought so. Besides there are kids that actually ARE called Willy!

it might be an idea to go with William and then if, down the line, he doesn't like Billy he can go for another version of his name.

I do tend of think of Billy as a child rather than a adult's name.

i like it

ds2 goes to nursery with Billy and i never even thought of it rhyming with Willy.

rnbsmum · 06/07/2008 22:03

I have a Billy though he is a William which we have shortened. I love it, though I expect he will choose Will when he is older and desparate to be cool!

I've met a few babies called Billy lately. I like it, but I would definitely give him the full name William so that he can decide for himself when he is older. He might feel William is more appropriate when chairing a board meeting.

My sister's boys call their penises billies so you'll never get away from that reference. My DH is Will and has never had any problem with this.

kitkat9 · 07/07/2008 18:16

have never heard of calling penises billies!

If our dc3 is a boy he's going to be Billy too - after a very dear cousin. But it'll be William on the birth certificate. I really love the name. Go for it!

Come to think of it, if dc3 is a girl, she might be Billie...that's quite cute...

greenelizabeth · 07/07/2008 18:59

I like Bill more than Billy.

TheRedQueen · 07/07/2008 19:05

I think it's a great name (slightly prejudiced though, as it was my dad's name!).

I would definitely go for full William though, so he can choose between Billy, Bill, Will and William when he's older.

I had a schoolfriend called Billy. He never got Willy, but he did often get Billy the Kid!

Alishanty · 07/07/2008 21:55

I know an adult Billy and it suits him but I always find it a bit weird that he is just called Billy and doesn't have the full name of William. My brother is William and he prefers Will.

gagarin · 07/07/2008 21:57

Billy Bunter (fatty)

Billy/Billy Whizz (speed)

Billy NoMates (like Nobby NoMates)

A bit risky perhaps?

Theresa · 07/07/2008 22:07

my nephew is 12 and is a william, always been called Billy, never had a problem with it, now we sometimes call him bill, sometimes billy

suwoo · 07/07/2008 22:08

Love Billy, lots. Go for it!

KillerStilettos · 08/07/2008 10:07

Yea gagarin

And my dad has already started chanting "Silly Billy"

I think I am going off the name now

Love it.

LMAsMummy · 13/07/2008 20:04

I know 2 children called Billy, a 9 year old and a new baby. Great name. 9 year old never had a problem. He is unbelievably cool with surfer curly blonde hair and attitude though. Which could explain it!

nickeldime · 19/07/2008 17:07

Billy or Willy, boy names ending in '-ly' have been dropping off the popularity ranks fast! boy names ending in -ly

hw2004 · 20/07/2008 16:23

I'd definately go for William and then shorten it to Billy if you want to. Personally I love 'Will' as the shortened version.
