Max is nice and not so commonly used now (was v popular a while ago)...Maxwell makes me think of a truly unpleasant contestant on Big Brother some yrs ago (and instant coffee)

Or there is also Macsen - traditional Welsh name, I think a prince in the Mabinogion (but I've never read it so I don't know for sure!). Again of course can shorten to Max.
