Uncommon but not overused vintage girl names?

ferio23 · Today 08:31

Me (21,F) and my husband (25,M) are having our first child. I'm due in February so I have some more time to choose. My husband and I want a vintage name, we don't want a overused name. We want a simple vintage name that is easy to spell that is still vintage.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ivy or Florence

#5 and #6 most popular names for girls and both been in the top 25 for at least 7 years. OP wants a name that isn't overused.

OP is 21, so names from the 1900s to 1950s would probably be vintage.

I'm technically old enough to be her grandmother! Vintage for me would probably be 1900s - 1930s.

Audrey. It's the name of one of the strongest women I have ever known - my beloved late aunt who would be 100 now. We encountered a little Audrey in the park a few weeks ago and thought how lovely it sounded on a young girl.

I love Iris and Mary. I work in a junior school and we don’t have any girls with these names and havent in the 5 years I’ve worked there. There was one Mary in my eldest son’s year. I love Nell as well, and we’ve only had one of those in my time (she is a Nelly - short for Penelope - Penny is also lovely and unusual come to think of it). Good luck, have fun choosing!

Penelope is quite popular where I live.

I always thought I would have daughters Kitty & Tillie (I didn't but I still love those names).

My grandmother had a lot of sibling and they all had good names: Daisy, Ivy, Eva, Betty.

I also think Tabitha and Jemima are nice names.

The prettiest names of people I knew in the 80s were:
Saskia
Dilys
Lara
Leonie
Annabel
Ursula
Chloe
Jilly

I really like Valerie

Amy is a very old name. Was ridiculously popular in the 90s, but has fallen off the radar since then. It was my grandmother's name and she was born in the late 1800s.

If I was pregnant now, I'd be going for the 60s and 70s names for a girl. So Rachel, Rebecca, Deborah, Heather, etc

I'm sure they're due for a revival.

Have to say, I'm less keen on the boys names from that era - Alan, Kenneth, Brian, Jeffrey, etc.

Generally names come back when the new mums don’t remember people with those names. So their great grandmother’s names. New mums now are likely to be born 1990s-early 2000s. Those names are their mums and aunties names, not their great grandmothers. 70s names will return about 80-100 years after they were used. So another 30-50 years away.

Ann or Alice

It seems like everyone over 65 where I live is called Ann or Sue. Please don't!
