Thoughts on the names Lotta and Marta please. Does Lotta work as a stand alone name? And is Marta too similar to the word martyr? Thanks🙂

I think you will get a Lotta negative comments, if you’re in the UK there will be be a Lotta teasing.

Lotto and (To)Marto

LlynTegid · 27/10/2026 18:38

Lotta, just please not, have some love for your child. Marta seems ok.

I love Lotta but normally see it spelt as Lotte

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 27/10/2026 21:31

Not keen on Marta

I like Marta
Lotta is pretty but does sound a bit like a nickname though, why not call her Charlotte with Lotta for short

HugoThatway · 27/10/2026 21:46

I know a Marta and she's nice. She's Swedish or Norwegian and I assumed it was that variant of Martha.

Lotta made me think of Whole Lotta Rosie.

Olderbutt · 27/10/2026 21:53

I like Marta too but what about Martha? Or Greta if you want a European name. Lotta on it's own is a bit hard.....how about Carlotta?

RaininSummer · 27/10/2026 22:02

I think poor Lotta will get loads of stupid jokes based on her name which would be tiresome for her. What about Lottie?

Giraffehaver · 27/10/2026 22:33

Marta and Lottie if using together sound lovely

HorribleHisTories15 · 27/10/2026 22:38

They sound like a pair of German or polish sibling names.
what about Lola, Nina or Rosa?

TallagallaPenguin · 27/10/2026 22:38

Really like them both, and both together.

Koalacanth · 28/10/2026 03:44

While they're both fine names, I'd avoid them because of the associations with "lot of" and "martyr".

Lotta is a diminutive of Charlotte and Charlotta.

Martha is a lovely alternative.

TheSandgroper · 28/10/2026 06:56

Lotta is out of the circus books by Enid Blyton.

I know a Marta and I think it’s lovely, as is Martine and Martina. And Mara from a recent thread. They just roll nicely off the tongue.

EveningSpread · 28/10/2026 07:00

Lotta sounds like it’s from Carlotta.
Carlotta and Marta - two nice European names.

As a Swede I love both names but would spell Marta - Märta. Unfortunately, I don’t think Lotta works well in English.
