Middle name dilemma - honoring all but one grandparent

Star1995xxx · 21/10/2026 23:23

We have two boys and are soon to have a baby girl. We agreed years ago that my husband would get to choose our first boys middle name and I’d get to choose the first girl.
DS1 - has DH’s dad’s name
DS2 - has my dad’s name
DD1 - due soon and I want to choose my mum’s name

The dilemma is that we are about 95% sure that this is our last baby so we’re considering using both mum’s names so that one grandparent isn’t left out. Both names are perfectly nice.

The issue is that we prefer the idea of just one middle name as our sons only have one - no one else in our families have two. However, we worry DH’s mum would feel left out and that makes us feel bad.

What does everybody think? Should we stick to just the one middle name we really wanted to pick or give DD both middle names to be fair and keep the peace?

Thanks x

Use both names. One of mine has one and the other has two and that's never been a problem. The third initial sometimes gets left off mail etc and I think that's the only negative (which it obviously isn't)

Two middle names naff? Lol!!

NerWayGerAway · 22/10/2026 10:55

I think two middle names is great. I wish I’d stuck to my guns and given mine two, DH didn’t want to.
However I don’t think you have to. As pp have pointed out it appears you didn’t feel the same about your Dad when naming DC1, unless DC1 and 2 are twins.
What if the 5% becomes 100% and you have DC4?

ginasevern · 22/10/2026 10:57

Use both as long as you like them and they work with your surname. Problem solved!

NamingNoNames · 22/10/2026 11:48

I'm another who doesn't see the point of middle names. They're usually filler middle names.
Something like Olivia Louise Rose Smith looks like you're trying to use all your favourite names.

Can you double barrel? Can you shorten one? If not, use both.

ToadRage · 22/10/2026 12:36

I have two middle names, my brother only has one. This problem always comes up in families where one gets left out, which is why i would never use my parents names for my children.tg

Haha ok thank you. So I’m getting the sense that we should do both. I don’t want to do neither because I’ve always wanted to use my mum’s name as it’s important to me.

I’d say both or neither, so in this case I’d use both (and hope you don’t have an accidental fourth 😂)

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 22/10/2026 12:44

Both or neither

Hyphenated names rarely sound good - they often don't work on forms.
Something like Olivia Louise-Rose Smith looks like you wanted to not have two middle names.

For middle names we decided my parents names took priority as they have the same surname as their paternal grandparents.

This is a good point too.

We also have a grandparent who doesn't like their own name. Which kinda made it easy
.
My own Dad im convinced thought it was just a courtesy thing, but it was more heartfelt than he ever realised or knew.

Sandpapertongue · 22/10/2026 14:51

Both

Having a surname as common as Smith and a forename as popular as Olivia is one very good reason for having a middle name!

I'd agree twice I've worked places with people with same or similar names like
Two Jim Smiths and a John Smith

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/10/2026 15:42

Both. It's easily done and will make everyone feel included.

CeciliaMars · 22/10/2026 15:58

Both. Or a combination! Not worth the upset.

I agree about filler names but this isn’t the case here.

ChilliPotato · 22/10/2026 16:02

I like two middle names a lot.

In your shoes I'd do both or neither. You're right that it would cause upset.

Yes, but not a filler one.
If there was an Olivia Rose Smith and Olivia Louise Smith and an Olivia Louise Rose Smith, they'd get mixed up.

XP had a common first name and surname. He started a new job and was surprised by several emails about his things like his company car being booked in for a service. Emails that addressed him as Mick not Mike/Michael etc. It was a duplicated name. They were something like Michael John Wright and Michael James Wright.

theworsttime · 22/10/2026 16:15

I did two names for my second son. My first son only has one. It’s annoying but needs must

Strokethefurrywall · 22/10/2026 16:26

Use both. My sister has 2, my brother has 3, I have 1 and the only one that wasn’t named after a family member (doesn’t bother me!)

My boys both have 2 middle names each, eldest has his dads name and my brothers name as middle names, youngest has both grandpas names.

Hoork · 22/10/2026 16:44

Both

WaryCyanStork · 22/10/2026 16:51

Agree with everyone saying both or neither.

I'm not generally sentimental about names, but I'd still be hurt if I was the only one of four to be left out.

sunshine2go · 22/10/2026 16:54

Use both!! Or none. Doesn’t matter how many you have. My childrens middle names are inconsistent one has 3 the other has 1. No one really knows to be honest.

Tryagain26 · 22/10/2026 16:55

Floppyearedlab · 21/10/2026 23:25

Choose neither. Two middle names is naff and honouring one but not the other is not nice.

There is nothing wrong with two middle names if that's what you want to do.
OP you don't have to give her the same number of names as your son's. Just do what you want.
