It's nice but definitely a bit horsey/posh - not that that's a bad thing. I like Nell as a nickname.

NautilusLionfish · 21/10/2026 02:19

Beautiful, delicate name. It also made me think of fertility app or hrt patch brand ame. Probably just showing my age and phase

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/10/2026 02:22

The only Fenella I knew was in the 80s and she was all pussy bow shirts and Barbour jackets. She was very posh and a bit lacking in common sense . She was very lovely though and it's a great name. Love the nn Nellie

When I looked it up it said it was the anglicised form of Fionnuala, but I have to say as an Irish person I’ve never come across a single Fenella. It’s not listed in the baby name records here either which means it’s very rare.
Maybe it’s more popular in Scotland?

Yes, it's one of several Scots derivatives from the Gaelic Fionnghual. Others that fell out of use include Finuel, Fennell and Fingola/Fingula and Finvola.

I know a Fenella, she's lovely but I have to say I don't particularly like the name, not for any reason, it's just not as pretty as Ella or Fiona IMO.

GoodLordMother · 21/10/2026 16:00

I knew one once, and I thought she was the coolest girl/woman ever. She was about 10 years older than me, she had a very cool pixie cut dyed orange, she was just cool and edgy and lovely too. I have never heard the name before or since but thought it was really interesting. She'd be late 40's now.

Specialneedsnightmare · 21/10/2026 16:11

Immediately thought of Fenella Fielding.

It's dated but ok. There's a high chance your dd will end up being Ella.

Mochudubh · 21/10/2026 16:38

Eeeh, she's a loovly little old lady!

I had a science teacher who was her spit.

Showing my age but Fenella was a witch in a kids TV programme so I do think of that character.

However, I'm in my 50s and the classic "Charlton and the Wheelies" which was the highlight of my day whenever I was off school sick, will not now be known by many.

Me too. I'm 51.

We have a Fenella at nursery, a “neighbours” daughter. We are rural so like five mile neighbours.

She is fantastic. We adore her. She is known as Fen. She is the one in a huge party dress with wellies and covered in mud.

Charlton and the Wheelies was an absolute classic! Sigh.

Always think that sounds like a musical instrument with lots of strings.
The sort a girl called Fenella would play after dinner in Downton.

Fenella on the fionnula!

I really can't explain why, but as children we always thought Fionnula sounded like anatomical euphemism, a kind of version of "ladies issues": "She's gone to the Gp. Think it might be issues with her fionnula."

ETA thinking on it years later, it was possibly shades of fanny and nude coming through that tipped us in that direction.

Fionnula is lovely too.

My preferred version - both fabulous names though.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 22/10/2026 13:08

Fenella was very posh and rather eccentric. Along the lines of Miranda Hart

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 22/10/2026 13:12

I know one, it’s fun and pretty name just like her

iloveanearlynight · 22/10/2026 13:27

I like it very much. Nell or Fern as a nickname are lovely.

VioletMatilda · 22/10/2026 16:48

Fenella was the woman who killed King Kenneth II in revenge for the death of her son. She lured him in front of a booby trapped statue which fired a crossbow.

She was a clever and brave woman.

Hoork · 22/10/2026 17:20

Very nice but does remind me of fennel. Floella?

PancakeCloud · 22/10/2026 17:21

Sounds fun and a bit posh to me. I really like it. Nell/nellie as a nn if you want one.
