Are you Irish/scottish?

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 20/10/2026 17:45

I know one - lovely young woman, has never had any issues with her name and it’s rarely abbreviated.

Alisonsy · 20/10/2026 17:51

It’s not hard to pronounce it, is it?

It reminds me of fennel

goudacheese · 20/10/2026 17:55

I know a Fenella, in her 60s - She's arty and a bit hippy, lovely person. I always think of Fenella Fielding from the film Carry on Screaming when I hear the name. It's unusual and quite pretty.

Happylife32 · 20/10/2026 17:58

Fenella is a lovely name.

Pplareasthickasshit · 20/10/2026 17:59

Fenella the Witch.

Calliopespa · 20/10/2026 18:08

I knew a couple.

One got Nellie as a nn.

I prefer it to Fionnula, which always made me go into fits of giggles as a child.

Caramac045 · 20/10/2026 18:08

I love the name and wish I had used it.

Ohcrap082024 · 20/10/2026 18:14

I know a Fenella. She’s hard, hard work. But I doubt it’s because of the name.

MaggieBsBoat · 20/10/2026 18:15

It’s a lovely name. One of my favourites.

CeciliaMars · 20/10/2026 18:17

I like it!

Timeforatincture · 20/10/2026 18:18

Very pretty without being cutesy. Excellent choice.

ginasevern · 20/10/2026 18:27

I think it's very nice. It's classy, certainly far from common place and makes a refreshing change. The only thing that might spring to my mind is the actress Fenella Fielding who was very attractive and popular in the 1960's/70's. But I'm showing my age with that one!

Veraandacupoftea · 20/10/2026 18:31

My grandma was fenella endora and I was so desperate to use it for my youngest.

Alas , he was a he , and oh hated it .

Lindy2 · 20/10/2026 19:00

Showing my age but Fenella was a witch in a kids TV programme so I do think of that character.

However, I'm in my 50s and the classic "Charlton and the Wheelies" which was the highlight of my day whenever I was off school sick, will not now be known by many.

NoteyMcNoteface · 20/10/2026 19:02

I too loved Chorlton and would always associate the name Fenella with the witch but it’s actually a lovely name.

In fairness to OH, it wouldn't sit that well on a he really!

Shloopie · 20/10/2026 20:20

It gives me Jilly Cooper vibes.

NoteyMcNoteface · 20/10/2026 20:22

Fionnula is lovely too.

TheBirdintheCave · 20/10/2026 20:24

I like Fenella. If my name didn’t rhyme with it it might have made our list.

Squirrelsnut · 20/10/2026 20:26

Do you mind if I smoke?

Shloopie · 20/10/2026 20:29

Maeve Binchy would have had a novel with characters called Fenella and Fionnuala.

Fenella: posh, English, charming, wild.
Fionnuala: Irish country girl, clever, beautiful

Fionnuala had loved Jack Power since childhood, they were all but engaged until Fenella came to their village one summer...

EdinaTheConfessor · 20/10/2026 20:33

There was a character in a book series I read yonks ago by Freya North called Fenella. She went by Fen and I always liked it and banked it for future kids names (along with Freya actually)
But I had 2 boys in the end.
Love the name though.

mathanxiety · 20/10/2026 20:41

Fenella is nice, if a little horsey.

Finola is also nice.

WildCherryBlossom · 20/10/2026 20:41

Beautiful name. Always thought the name of the actress Fenella Fielding was very glamorous.
