Alright, what do we think?

Found out we’re are in fact having a baby girl, extremely excited since we already have her name picked: Asha, sweet and simple. Now the issue is her middle name, I want the name Shahad, not really sure how to spell it for my fellow Americans. It’s Arabic/urdu for honey and have always loved the name, but I want it to be easy to pronounce. I kind of feel like it’s a lost cause bc it’s probably gonna get butchered anyways.

I like Asha.
You might want to get this moved to a more appropriate topic though because you’ve posted in arts and crafts!

I was thinking the same

@00luyan please come back and tell us why you posted this in arts and crafts. Put us out of our misery.

It's a bit of a mouthful to say since there's lots of the same letters in the first and middle name, it'll sound like Ashashahad.

A lot of people never really used their middle names anyway though so go for it if you like it.

How do you pronounce it? I'd assume Sha-had.

MirandaBlu · 04/10/2026 14:43

Is it pronounced like one slightly drawn out syllable (Shahhd), or two (Shah-HAD)? I would guess that Shahad will typically be pronounced as two syllables by people unfamiliar with the name, while Shahd would probably get you close to the one syllable pronunciation.

But there's not much reason for random people to be reading out a child's (or adult's) middle name, so if in doubt I'd go with the spelling that seems most familiar or traditional to you and you can always correct people as necessary as it won't be nearly as often as a hard-to-pronounce first name.

DeeNiall · 04/10/2026 20:42

The Arabic for honey is asal.

@MirandaBlu , it sounds like SHA-hid

Fast800goingforit · 04/10/2026 20:44

It's Urdu for honey

Asha Shadad Surname.

The sha is both the first and middle name is a mouth full and clashes IMO. Although 99% of the time she'd just be Asha, which is lovely. If you love Shadad, I've be tempted to add a 2nd middle name before it, to break up the sha sha sounds.

I don’t think you can have Asha followed by Shahad. The 2 ‘sha’ sounds one after another is a bit of a mouthful/tonguetwister

What about an alternative middle name with a similar meaning?

  • Halaa (حلا): A short and modern-sounding name that literally means "sweet" or "to be sweet".
  • Hulwah / Hulwa (حلوة): The literal Arabic word for "sweet" or "beautiful".
  • Halawah / Halawa (حلاوة): A lovely traditional name meaning "sweetness".
  • Sukkar (سكر): A unique, vintage name that literally translates to "sugar".
  • Asali (عسلي): Meaning "sweet like honey" or "honey-coloured".
  • Azeebah / Azbah (عذيبة / عذبة): Refers to something "fresh and sweet,"often used in classical Arabic to describe sweet, pure water.
FrogsLoveRain · 04/10/2026 22:52

Probably because arts and crafts is the first choice topic listed

Calliopespa · 04/10/2026 22:54

I'm sure you are aware, but in the UK Asher is probably more known as a name and it is a boy's biblical name.

They seem to be about names that are for the USA and by users with no other posts, and if the OP comes back it will be to repeat the OP appended by a dodgy-looking link.

Honey as a term of endearment could be represented by Habibi.

Maybe MNHQ might know,

They don't. Each time a baby name thread pops up in arts and crafts I report it, ask for it to be moved and ask if they know why. They generally reply to say they have no idea.
I have this vain hope that one day one of the OPs of these threads will have an explanation.

MurphysColeslaw · 04/10/2026 23:23

There’s a lot of shh in there.

user1492757084 · 07/10/2026 08:31

Asha is nice.
Asha Shahad is fine.
Don't make Shahad her first name as kids could tease her and say it lazily as - Sh*th*ad.

Other ideas ..
Asha Honey
Asha Beatrix - Asha Bee.

It’s just because it is the first topic in the dropdown list when you post.

DeeNiall · 08/10/2026 21:30

The OP will either not come back or will just repost with 'i got this [link]'
There might be a few more threads about the names in the OP.

@PurpleLovecats , not on mine. The first one is AIBU?

DeeNiall · 08/10/2026 21:41

@PurpleLovecats , the topics are listed numerically first then in alphabetical order but preceded by most popular. Arts and crafts is not top of the list, 30 days only is. Under A there are topics like Addiction, Adoption, ...
